It just looks they patched the "HD mods" from the original onto the Special Edition, increased the coloring, and slapped "Special Edition" onto it. Not really sure if it's worth it. I was looking into buying it, but after I see these screenshots, I'm speculating.

Just buy the original GOTY version for less money, download a few mods and an ENB, voila, better looking than the "Special" version.

Maybe they physically send their gold copy to Valve to distribute? :)

They must be talking about Consoles. As far as I know they only do digital downloads on PC. Don't know why anyone bothers with discs anymore. Most of the games I've gotten on disc lately just have stub installers or instructions to redeem on Steam or publisher platform of choice.

Heck yeah I'm going for this one, although it won't be the same until the mods get ported. Not sure I can play a ton before the 4k and 8k texture mods come out. Apparently the texture format and physics engine got updated in the process. It'll be directx 11 as well as 64bit capable.

I actually picked up the game on Steam sale a few years back for 37.99. The mods kept me coming back to it again and again. I even put the game and save files on an SSD for faster load times with all the mods I loaded in.

Just noticed this was added to my steam archive. So do you have to uninstall the old version first or leave it? Was nice of them to give a free copy. Getting ready to start pre-load.

It's there in my Steam Library, but I have no intention of downloading it. My old Skyrim is already visually superior to the "special" edition using the methods mentioned above.

its 64bit vs the 32bit original, so it can be modded beyond what Skyrim original can handle

I got it preloaded, but we know the preload is compressed and needs to be extracted for install. We also know that Bethesdas idea of a high resolution texture is not much compared to the mod community who dropped 4k textures and improved static meshes. On the other hand they are using newer compression methods introduced in dx11 so it might not be so bad. I'm really hoping for a drastic improvement in draw distance, the reshaping of the background in real time was driving me nuts. I can't to play some later tonight.

It is Skyrim, so they probably fixed some broken quests that didn't start in the first place. They also broke all mods, so in effect killed tons of quests. One problem Bethesda has is too many interconnected quest lines in an open world. Can't tell you how many time exploring an area or cave finished a quest I hadn't even started.

For those that are lucky to be able to play it there is a G-Sync issue that is playing havoc with FPS rates. It is being said to turn G-Sync off. Keep this in mind if you are having low FPS.

what kind of FPS are you getting while GSYNC is active? Try turning VSYNC on, see if that helps.

The game unlocked for me about 11 oclock my time. Looks more crisp but nothing to write home about. They did finally fix the blocky shadows. Plays nice and smooth. Only using one of my cards at about 60 percent to maintain 60fps at 2560x1600 ultra settings. SLI doesn't work with latest driver. Putting it away now till they make compatible mods for it. Oh! I almost forgot the game did not install anything extra when it unlocked so the new game is actually smaller in size than the original.
