I Recently Purchased An RTX 3060 12GB As Part Of A Bundle, And Subtracting The Value Of The Other Items In The Bundle The Card Was $150 Above MSRP. I haven't yet received the card, but when I do I am considering EVGA's step up so I can get an RTX 3070. It will cost $200 more, and have 4GB less ram. I am a software developer, graphic designer, and video editor, but I want to start learning game development in Unreal Engine and 3D modeling and animation in blender. I am concerned about the RAM amount on the RTX 3070, because I've heard in 3D modeling when GPU rendering is active and you are rendering a complex scene, there is the possibility of running out of RAM if you only have an 8GB card. However, for game development, video editing, and less complex 3D renders, the RTX 3070 is better than the RTX 3060 because it's faster. Is it worth upgrading to the RTX 3070 with only 8GB of RAM for $200 more?

Thanks,

You should upgrade... It is definitely worth it! Maybe even consider going for 3070ti or 3080! Due to the shortage, you won't regret it, the earlier you apply upgrade, the sooner you may get the new card.

Don't worry about the VRAM size, it is not an issue.

Thank you for your advice! I will mostly be doing video editing/graphic design anyways, and the 3D modeling I will be doing is mostly for game development, not animation which is what requires VRAM. How much of a performance difference is there between 3070 and 3070 Ti?

    3070 vs 3070ti about 10% performance improvement
    3070ti vs 3080 about 20% performance improvement
    3070 vs 3080 about 30% performance improvement

3080 has best price value though in my opinion, but the price goes pretty high.
Plus 3080 seem to be popular pick for many... So you might have to wait awhile to get your hand on 3080...

consider stepping up to the 3080 12 gb model  or the 3080 TI   if you are concerned with the ram issue .
both are much more powerful cards

Yeah, I would recommend the 3080 or the 3080 12gb as well.

be ready to pay more, youre going to be paying FULL tax value of the stepup. ie. MSRP of the 3070, $719.99+ Tax = X, Then X - the Price of your 3060. Oh and add shipping from you to EVGA, and EVGA back to you. so maybe $80-$100...

It will cost you net $290 from 3060 to 3070 ($719.99 - $429.99).  You only get credit for the EVGA MSRP and not what you paid to the retailer.  As noted above, you will also pay tax twice, plus the cost of original shipping 3060 to you, then shipping that 3060 to EVGA (insured), then EVGA shipping the 3070 to you.  Given estimate of 7% tax and average shipping from retailer and vendor to you ~$15 and you to EVGA of $20... Your total net cost is $850 for the 3070.  NOT including whatever markup you paid to that retailer above $430 for the 3060 (hidden in the bundle cost).  Use these realistic values, or calculate your actuals, then decide.

It might be worth stepping up and getting the process started but I would recommend using the card and deciding if you need more speed or if you feel you would need the VRAM. You could even start with a week to decide what you want to step up to before stepping up.

Considering the current shortage, I would go for the best card that you can afford. Then you don't have to worry about upgrading for another 3 years or so. You use it for productivity, it should pay for  itself. I do Unity on the side for fun. The faster card you have, the less time you spend waiting.

Doesn't the card have to be in it's original packaging when I return it to EVGA? Also, I don't have a PC to test it in yet as I am saving up for a new build (My current PC is small form factor, so it's not big enough to fit a GPU)

Original packaging yes but it can be used while waiting for your step up to complete. Just be sure to save the anti-static bag, the rubber pcie/bracket covers, and all the materials inside of the box when you open it. I used my 3070 for a month or so waiting for my Step-Up to complete. Once I received the email to send it back to EVGA, I just packed it up and sent it out the next morning. I'm on the East Coast so it did take almost 2 weeks for my card to arrive at EVGA and for them to send me my new card back.

It does NOT have to be in the original packaging. It is suggested to have it, because its an added layer of protection when shipping the card, instead of it being in some Box with bubble wrap or packing paper....

If you plan to step up your GPU, keep the box. But that part is not mandatory. You can open it, game and bench with it, mod it, stare at it, take selfies with it… but it must be returned in its original factory condition and properly protected for shipment. No damage, no missing parts, no aftermarket (non OEM) parts. It is highly recommended to insure your return shipment to EVGA. They will not be responsible for damage on that leg of the process.

    Good Luck !

You should upgrade... It is definitely worth it! Maybe even consider going for 3070ti or 3080! Due to the shortage, you won't regret it, the earlier you apply upgrade, the sooner you may get the new card.

well 2 way to see it.

Prices are crazy, so IMO, the 30 series for many will be a card in waiting of the 40 or 50 series, hoping the prices are going normal.

3070ti will be vram limited before hitting sub-60fps @1440p. So shortage or not, this wont be a 3-4 year card, and you'll pay too much .

Imo, the best waiting card is the 3060ti. it will run AAA very well until 40-50 series.

For a real gamer that can't wait, i think the 3080 12gb is a great choice.

at the end, this is a gamble. Does the price will go down ? do the new series will be better? can't tell.

Buying for the church live streaming computer - one of the bundle's is coming with RTX 3060 (12GB) for $1000 and other bundle is coming with RTX 3070 (8GB) for $1287; Rest of the config is all same with (12th gen i7 +16gb RAM+512SSD,1TBHDD).

From this forum - i see RTX 3070 is far superior but given our use case (live stream and lil bit of editing) which one to consider; Please advice - Great appreciate it.
