Anybody know the screwdriver size to remove screws from a GTX 470.. I did a google search and came up with 4 different screwdriver sizes people have been using and I want to make sure I use the right one..
A post over at overclock.net suggests that they are fearson screws and I should use a fearson screwdriver? But what size?  Another post I found says they're #0 philips but say to make sure I get one with a big handle?

The #1 from this set fits them perfectly. I bought mine at Lowe's.

A #0 Phillips has never let me down.

This screwdriver I bought at Fry's Electronics is surprisingly handy.  I haven't had a single video card job which this screwdriver couldn't satisfy.

It has #0 and #00 Phillips bits, Torx 5, 6, and 8 as well as 2mm and 3mm flat head.  And then as a bonus, the receptacle that the bits goes into is the correct size for unscrewing the standoffs around the VGA and DVI outputs.

Alright, thanks! I already have a precision philips set that size..
I think I'll see if I can find #1 screwdriver set with bigger handles as that seems to be what people are recommending elsewhere.

Edit: Found a set that has both #0 and #1 with big handles..  I think that should do it..  Thanks a lot for your help.

I hope that "#1 screwdriver" does not refer to #1 Phillips screwdriver size.  #1 Phillips is too large and will strip the screw head out since it will only grab the top surface of the screw and not slide all the way in to grip the screw farther in.  The correct size is #0 Phillips.

I have used the #1 out of this set for years to remove the screws from video cards. Including a GTX 470
I have never stripped out the first one.
    It's not rocket science.
Just keep the screwdriver straight and apply firm pressure.

First, you need to answer if "#1" is the size or just the product's description. Secondly, just because you have used that size without issue does not mean that is the correct size. The correct size is #0.

You keep saying "the #1 out of this set". What size is it? #1 Phillips or some other size? Is the slot it fits in in the set simply slot 1 or is it #1 size? If it were #1 size, why do you keep saying "... in this set". #1 size is #1 size in all sets.

Sure it isn't rocket science, but if you want to use the correct size, it is #0 Phillips.

    Thanks for the confirmation.
For me the #0 was to small and the #1 was a perfect fit.
I didn't feel like arguing over such a pointless matter and that's why I deleted my previous comments.

I'm sorry, you are correct.  The #1 does fit better.

My Snap-On #1 didn't fit as good as a #0, but I tried a different #1 bit and it fit much better.

Snap-On: what gives?  Also, the tip of my Snap-On #2 shattered while I was using it.  A sign of the times I guess.

    #1 Snap-On:

    #0 Picquic:

    #1 Apex:

The differences are definately subtle visually, but the #1 Snap-On feels way looser in the screw head than the #0 Picquic.  Alternately, the #1 Apex feels very snug compared to the #0 Picquic.

Wow~ That's very enlightening..  I've heard the Snap-Ons are the best scewdrivers money could buy.
Is it possible some of your screwdrivers are just worn down a bit?

So the #1 Apex is the best? Is that a brand new Apex or something you've had for 10 years and might be worn town perhaps?

not a problem my friend :) I wasn't angry or such I just didn't want him to strip out the screws using the #0. I actually did on the first card I took apart using the #0 from that taskforce set. Guess I should have been more specific on that.

Hmmmm...  OK, I've come to the conclusion that screw driver sizes are all FUBAR...

Take a look at this.. These are BOTH PH-1 tips from two different sets of screwdrivers.

    http://sidicas.dyndns-server.com:8090/Screwsizes/PH1_01.png

    http://sidicas.dyndns-server.com:8090/Screwsizes/PH1_03.png

It looks like there exists a PH1 tapered tip and a PH1 untapered tip and I have both of them.   Is your Apex #1 tapered while your Snap-On #1 not tapered?  Perhaps this tapered PH-1 tip is the definitive size? Anybody else able to put in any inputs on whether their PH-1 that they used is tapered (extra pointy) or not?

Edit: BTW, let me know if you can't access the above URLs.  Yes, I know they're slow, sorry.

I've been staring at them for half an hour..  It's starting to look like one of them has a slightly longer tip than the other. Everything else is the same (same angles, same diameter at the base, etc.). One of them has a longer tip and so it's tip is smaller.

I don't know if my screw problem the same as yours. I've trouble in taking off the screws on my GTX470. I managed to loosen a few and not those surrounding the GPU. All are very difficult to loosen using all y available screw driver tips. Did you manage to have the screw taken out?

I was asking before I even tried to take my coolers off of my cards because I've read a lot about people having difficulties..

Some of the screws were in there real good, but I didn't have any problems taking all the screws out of both cards with the pointy PH-1 head.  The PH-1 head that has the rounded tip would not grip the screw firmly so I didn't even try to use it.

For every screw, I had a heat gun in one hand, the card on a flat hard surface, and I stood over it and put firm straight-down pressure on every screw.   There were a few screws that were threadlocked in place and put up a fight, so I took the heatgun to them and I'm not sure if that helped or not, but I got them out by using a bit more downward pressure and elbow muscle, along with the heatgun.

Had a sore elbow by the time I was done with both cards, but didn't have any problems.  Just go slow and if the screwdriver starts to slip in the screw, stop and put more downward pressure on it. Watch the screws carefully to make sure they're spinning and you're not just stripping them.

But boy does it feel good to do something that most people mess up (take a google search and see how many people ruined their screws and had to drill them out).

I also used the heatgun to warm up the heatsink a bit and it practically came off by itself when all the screws were out.

    Good luck!!

Edit: BTW, Heat gun = High Wattage Hair Dryer
Edit #2: Almost forgot... Make sure you use a screwdriver that has a handle that fits in your palm (ie: Not the Philips "precision" screwdriver set with the narrow handles) . Otherwise the screwdriver will be slipping in your hand.

I think that pretty much covers all the tips/advice I've ever heard for taking the screws out of these cards..
