What they forget is that by just overclocking is not competing in that sense, since you should/can, also overclock the GTX 470 so its "pointless" for enthuasists, since they overclock anyway >.>

I like your wording (to try and compete) .. do you know something we don't ??  that little speed bump is notting to what a 5850 is capable of in overclocking as some can reach 900Mhz on stock voltage..
the card is so soild that Ati could release a bios flash for factory 825Mhz core.. but there was no 470GTX to compete with back when they had the screw driver in hand which is all Nvidia has been doing and why it's taking so long..(6 months)

So the 470GTX is the one( to try and compete) in sales..

i agree. the GTX470s real performance isnt really even out yet. the last estimate was a 5-10% increase in performance. and that was before the new Catalyst drivers came out that increased performance in ATI5XXX cards by like 10%.

I don't know why people look down on 5870s and 5970s like they can't compete against the all mighty fermie lmao, its like saying that a 2011 corvette is obsolete because ford is releasing a new 5.0 mustang, its pretty stupid, ATI is taking this round kids.

PS, Good luck overclocking that big overheating Pos with hideous heat pipes everywhere lol, My dual GPU 5970 can overclock to 1000Mhz on the core with stock cooling, the 5870s can go up to 1150 on the core also with stock cooling and both never get hotter than 75-80c

@ fanboy... Rated your post +5....

The good news is..... Around April 5th we will see results from members here and then we will know....

All this 5-10% stuff makes for good conversations and all. But I have to say that ATI offerings right now IMHO are the best they have ever offered. I mean come on... Show me how many sectors ATI is not covering right now in DX11 land, or even just performance! That is looking to be a significant mountain Nvidia now has to climb. Only question is how long it will take.

I am personally really excited about the next 60 ish days. Price wars, used inventory, and FINALLY both camps have their parts in the streets!

In the long run... Nvidia probably learned a lot from this past year, and I have a sneaky suspicion that they will "Spin" the first runs as a success. But the second offerings will far exceed the normal 5-10% "Refresh" performance increase threshold.

Regardless these Fermis will be solid performers out the gate and make a "Thirsty" enthusiast very happy.

AMD/ATI has been trying very hard to compete with both Intel and NVIDIA. Although I prefer the NVIDIA + EVGA product lineup ATI products are nothing to sneeze at and they were first to release a DX11 video card. You have to give them credit. Their competition is what is helping to drive NVIDIA to release superior products and keep costs down.

What rj says is completely true.  Its like there would be no heaven without hell, no darkness without light.  In order for nvidia to release excellent products at a good price it NEEDS ATi.  Otherwise we would be left with something like micro$oft.

cuz its running at 350 MHz with a 1:1 FSB DRAM ratio lol.  It has a 9.5 GB/sec read speed and I think a 6-7 GB/sec write speed which I think is fast for DDR2 RAM but nothing too special

I've always wondered about ATI cards with this type of exhaust backplate; it looks very restrictive; with just 1/4th of the backplate used for ventilation, where does all the hot air go? do they tend to overheat?

They don't overheat at all, in fact they remain quite cool. When mine were on air, they would max out at around 70C full load with only 40% fan speed. Overclocked at 1000Mz running 1.225v they maxed out at about 80C with 50% fan speed.

i have to change my sig , but when i had my 3 hd 5870's they were the best cards i ever owned..they overclocked so easy i was baffled..just 1 of my cards scored 21k in vantage overclocked..i sold them all for full price and grabed a hd 5770 today till gtx 470 comes out..again this little card for 159 bucks has be so impressed..again i can get it to 1000/1350 stable right out of the box..

never had a low end card but im shocked at how this 1 little card can run battlefield bad company at 1080p on high setting at a playable 40fps-53fps a sec..have to turn the aa down some tho..i think ati has a fantastic lineup of dx 11 cards.

If the new gtx 480 flops i will have no problems going back to ati...but i think the gtx 470 and 480 will be fine..i just can not wait for water blocks..them heatsinks are ugly :-(

Thanks craptacularone. Since the fan is pretty much centered on the GPU, are these cards designed to dump hot air inside the case?

I see that the fan housing is not recessed to allow any airflow if two or more GPU's are used. Say, I wanted to put three in trifire or whatever it's called, how much gap would there be in between two cards using the next adjacent PCI-e slot?

Would the second card have any difficulty getting enough air to cool itself?

Those are the new, non reference, coolers davey.  The partners will use those in order to increase their margins slightly as the reference cooler is probably more expensive to produce.  The new coolers do dump more heat into your case, but the partners do claim it keeps the card cooler and quieter.  I feel like I like the reference cooler better, it seems higher quality.

The reviews also say the fan will never go above 31% speed on gaming where they are very quiet for the reference cooler, not sure about the new ones.

Is that right?- Non "referenced," meaning they don't come equipped with this cooler design if I bought this particular unit today? So it's a 'test sample' then?

I like the way it it looks, but I'm not sure in terms of cooling whether it would be adequate when X-fired. Is Sapphire a good brand?

LOL @ seabigbear! I hear alot of good things about EVGA despite having never tried any of their products. I'm on the verge of jumping ship from BFG just to try out a different brand. Not that BFG is bad by any means. I've been very satisfied, and used their products for quite some time without a hitch. I wish I could say that about my old ATi Radeon - All in Wonder.

Nooo lol.  You will get this cooler, a lot of the newer cards are using it now.  A reference design is simply specific specifications and models the board partners can copy if they don't want to try to figure out any cooling solutions themselves.  All of the original cards had ATi reference printed circuit boards and coolers.

They probably still are using the reference circuit board design from ATi, but decided to make their own coolers that cost less to produce.  The non-reference coolers will always work just fine especially if its from a reputable company like saphire.

LOL..Thanks top ace. I wasn't sure what you meant by it being a 'reference' cooler.   We learn something new everyday.

In this particular case, they aren't replacing the reference cooler because it costs less to produce; in fact it costs more because of the vapor chamber technology. They are doing it because of its added cooling potential and reduction in noise, which merits the price increase (not to mention the added gb of ram). I've owned a couple Vapor-X cards before, and have been nothing but amazed. Before the 5970, Sapphire was the only manufacturer to use the vapor chamber technology to cool their cards, so in a way they are the originals, and a very good brand to start. You'll have no issues crossfiring them, they run cool and the fan speed never really ramps up much on the default temperature thresholds, meaning its barely audible. I personally would recommend this card or the 5870 vapor-x's.

My point is we are all smart people and everyone here knows what RV870 core is capeable of in speed even RJ knows what that core can do as Ati showed it with HD4890 and 1000Mhz core clocks,, Nvidia should really thank Ati for not useing it on the first go around as it's make life easy when you can find a place to fit your product in..

Also thanks for the +5 AB...

The card looks cool but, it's still ATI under the hood, sucks don't it!!!!!

    <rant>

Do they give out darwin awards for forum posts?  If so I'd like to submit one on seabigbear's behalf.....

Being a fanboy is one thing but being dumb is another.  You shouldn't care who has the fastest hardware, Nvidia and ATI will be going head to head soon with products and the prices will go down.  Anyone who purchases one product over the other based on preference instead of cold hard facts is an idiot.  I've been waiting for the 480 release so that I can determine which card I should upgrade to since I have common sense, I suggest you do the same before hitting the submit button here in the forum.

    </rant>

(ok that was a bit outside the bounds of the TOS but his posts have been like this a while so hopefully this smacks some sense into the kid)
