I recently purchased a SSD for the sole purpose of decreasing load time when playing Skyrim. My question is, would I have to install Windows on the SSD to get the full performance benefit from having a SSD? I was thinking of installing the SSD and moving Skyrim on it with a program called Steam Mover. Basically , does the OS have to be on the SSD to get the full benefit of having a SSD?
Thoughts?

You'd want to load the OS + games onto the SSD. Use the hard drives for storage (music, videos, documents, etc)

This. That's exactly what I'm doing. I have my OS, and BF3 on my SSD only, then everything else is on my RAID-0 array. It's simple to do once you get the hang of setting up shortcuts and what not.

    My Laptop (GE63VR-7RF):
    -7700HQ.
    -16GB RAM.
    -GTX 1070.
    -128GB SSD.
    -1X 1TB 7200 spinny drive.

Is there a substantial decrease in load screen times since you went SSD?

Lemme put it in perspective for you. My BF3 load time went from 45 seconds-2 minutes down to 15 seconds tops. My windows load time went from 5 minutes~ to about 25 seconds.

    My RAID-0

    My single SSD:

SSDs are nice. From complete cold boot to actually using windows is less than 30 seconds. It takes longer to load my BIOS than it does actually loading windows. lol.

But if you want Skyrim to have almost 0 load time, buy more RAM and create a RAM Disk and install Windows 7 onto that. Then Skyrim. Then the entire game is literally running on a temporary RAM disk. Move save games over to an external HDD before you reboot.

Interesting. Never heard of doing that, of course I just mess around with pc's in my spare time so there is a lot I don't know about. What are the advantage / disadvantages of doing that?

    Sounds promising!
Apparently putting the game only on the SSD doesn't accomplish much as I haven't noticed a huge difference by doing that. Looks like I'm gonna just do a clean install so I can get that " like new" feeling :)

It can use your system RAM if you have more than your system uses and speed up loading times.

Thanks for the link. That is insane in a good way! My current MB only supports 24 gig ram
So it's not really an option right now but it's definitely a glimpse into the future ..

I use my 64GB SSD for OS, 1TB standard for programs, downloads, and 256GB SSD for games and loading times is still fast, they don't have to be on the OS drive

steam mover isn't required anymore, steam supports setting up new folders/installing to different drives for games, so they don't have to be installed in steams original install location.

I recommend that you install the OS on your SSD too,
and programs that require high disk demands
in this way is my pc
