Last night I made an impulse buy: Amazon.com had a special on SanDisk Extreme SSD 120GB GB SATA 6.0 Gb-s2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (SDSSDX-120G-G25) for $100.  I have had nothing but problems with my Western Digital Raptor drives for the past three years, so I thought I'd give a SSD a spin.  I ordered a Thermaltake 3.5 to 2.5" SSD HDD Bay Drive Converter Kit (AC0014). Talked with SanDisk tech support and they said my SATA II connection should be compatible, although it would not give me the performance improvement I'd expect with a SATA III interface.

I'm set up with Drive "C" as system/software only, and drive "D" setup as a image copy of "C" (I use WD's version of Acronis True Image to make the image copies).  I though I'd pull out "D" and install the SSD in its place, then use Acronis to make an image on the SSD ("D"), then try to boot from "D" (since the 780i lets me select the boot drive), and if that works, put the drives in order.

Does any of this make sense?  Any pitfalls that I should look out for?

You should be ok. I don't know if your motherboard supports AHCI but otherwise in normal mode in should be fine.

780i does not support AHCI so you will need to use the windows storage controller driver and not the nvidia ones for TRIM to work, a few guides have been posted here but in short you want to remove the nvidia nforce storage drivers, and then in device manager delete the storage controller, dont worry windows will ask you to reboot and install the generic windows drivers from microsoft update, make sure though you dont still have the extracted nvidia driver sitting some place on your C drive or windows will re-install them. after you get that set use acronis to make you image copy and then swap drives, should work just fine, but if not then post back here

Quadlatte, you are way over my head.  I just read a general discussion on AHCI, and have heard of TRIM; alas, I really don't know what I need to do.  You indicated that some guides have been posted.  Can you point me to them?  Are they specific to the 780i?  Did I make a mistake in buying this SSD?

I had hoped that I could just drop this in place in replace the old disk drive; apparently, it is more complicated than that ...

    Thanks!

I have a sata 3 ssd with my 790i. using the windows storage controllers (just dont install the nvidia chipset drivers, video drivers ONLY) and i have had no issues with it. Speeds max at sata 2 speeds. all is stable.

Note that if you have a creative x-fi sound card like i do. Expect to have your sound drivers disappear after a restart or cold boot every month or two. I've read its a bug with their drivers when using an nvidia chipset and an ssd. Simple "fix" for this issue is just uninstalling the sound card from the device manager, rebooting, letting them install again automatically, and rebooting.
not sure if this bug applies to the 780i as well but i would assume since our boards have the same mcp southbridge.

xfi cards have always been buggy with nvidia chipset boards, mine was buggy to the point i pulled it and use the onboard sound instead

the SSD is a great upgraded and will work fine with your board with the exception of AHCI support, the only real thing you will not have is hot plug capability. the TRIM command which is just a way to keep the drive performing at top performance by keeping the garbage taken care of (when you delete files, unlike a mechanical drive a SSD handles these deleted blocks differently which requires either a program like early drive had or use of the TRIM command)
you will need to remove the nvidia storage sata drivers, after that delete the storage controller from device manager, next make sure the nvidia temp folder on your c drive is deleted, this folder contain the uncompressed drivers from when you installed them, next reboot, you will see the add new hardware, let it find your hardware and search for a driver from windows update, you want the standard IDE microsoft driver, once that driver is installed you will need to reboot again, after you reboot you should see in the device manager standard IDE controler and not nvidia sata controller. then trim will automatically run everytime you delete files.

i looked for some of the guides but it looks like evga did a purge again so there gone.

    1. If I remove the sata drivers, how will the other four disk drives work?
    2. See the photo of the device Manager:

they will work with the microsoft drivers also, look in the IDE/ATAPI section of your device manager. you may even see a speed boost on your other drives with the MS drivers.

uninstall from the control panel first, make sure the nvidia folder on you c drive (or where they where extracted to) is deleted as well, this folder only contain the compressed file that came with the exe file you downloaded from nvidia.
