I currently have 2x9800GT 512mb SLI 55nm 700mhz core 1750mhz shader and 2000mhz ram. They performe very well for me but sometimes can be troublesom. My current resolution is 1680x1050 and not upgrading anytime soon.
Other specs
 CPU:Phenom II x4 965 o/c'ed
 Motherboard:MSI NF 750-G55
 PSU:Antec TP-750 [link=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-022-_-Product]http://www.newegg.com/Pro...roduc...-022-_-Product[/link] Ram:4gb OCZ Platinum 1333mhz DDR3

I am not convinced that I would see a huge improvement but I would like to raise my FPS in a few games like Just cause 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat. I can sell one of my 9800GT's and a 550w BFG powersupply to my friend for $100 to cover some of the cost out of pocket. Basically just want opinions suggestions what would you do if you in my situation?

*I am sticking with Nvidia no ATI please as I have a NForce motherboard that supports SLI, not Crossfire so a second GTX470 could always be in my future. Its only 8xPCIe when in SLI but is Gen 2.0.

The 470 boasts better minimum framerates and more rendering horsepower. It's also DX11 compatible, so a new GTX 470 would be a good choice.

9800GT SLI performs slightly worse than a single GTX 260.  A GTX 470 performs on par with a GTX 260 SLI setup, but with higher minimum FPS, better PhysX processing, better AA performance, and DX11 support.

So you'd see a huge performance increase if your CPU is pushed far enough and if you redo your drivers properly.

Also, perhaps a mother board upgrade is in order. I'm using the NF980 from MSI for my Phenom II 955, and as far as I know it is the only AM3/DDR3/SLI board out there. You may see better perfomance from your processor. Also I'm loving my 470. A beast of a card.

No I do not need a motherboard upgrade. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130235&cm_re=NF750-g55-_-13-130-235-_-Product

Also CPU performance is not a issue at all

Oh I didn't know they released a 2-way sli board with those capabilities, my bad. Nope CPU isn't a problem.

Fixed it for ya. Also in my case my cards will easily outperform a GTX260 in any game that uses SLI. Thanks for the input everyone.

No it was right before.  I was posting typical results.  My old GTX 260 CORE 216 rig actually outperformed my friend's 8800GTX SLI rig.  Same resolution but he has an overclocked QX6850 while I have a wittle E8400.

So you've tested 9800GT SLI versus a single GTX 260?  If so, interesting results.  Many people here upgraded from 8800GT SLI (or 9800GT SLI) to a single GTX 260 and enjoyed the GTX 260 much more.  No need to rely on SLI, better performance especially at large resolutions.
