Working on a "new" rig build that is a bit retro. I had a lot of fun in the 80's with 8-bit and 16-bit computing. This is a bit of a love letter to the 80's built for nostalgia sake with a modern twist. Here is my ultimate Apple IIgs build, 2021 version work in progress. Looking to do a backlight LED kit on the keyboard and RGB programmable lighting for the case.

Apple IIgs ROM3 motherboard
MacEffects IIe -> IIgs clear case kit
MacEffects IIe clear keyboard (still in Kickstarter)
UltimateApple2 Universal Power Supply
VidHD 1080p video card
Uthernet II network card
Booti hard drive emulator card
Garrets Workshop GW4201D 8MB memory card
BMOW Floppy Emu disk emulator
BMOW Wombat ADB to USB keyboard/mouse adaptor
ReactiveMicro IIe to USB keyboard adapter

I picked up the domain name retro-ii.gs awhile back. Probably put up a page for the build there.

There is a lot of fine tuning still to do on it. Donno of anyone else who has a ROM3 in a IIe case conversion. When Apple did the original IIe -> IIgs conversion kits back in the 80's they were a bit rare even then. With the clear case mod, this thing is a bit of a unicorn. Need to do some testing of the ADB <- USB <- IIe keyboard ribbon cable to make sure mouse and IIe keyboard all work good. All other IIe -> IIgs conversions were ROM1's because only ROM1 had the IIe keyboard ribbon cable port on the board. It's missing from ROM3's.

Very Cool, old meets new. Will the RGB be controlled via Arduino or something like that?

I have an Apple II adaptor card that can power a Raspberry Pi off the internal Apple II slot bus. Wonder if there is an option there for raspberry pi RGB control. I'll have to research out options.

I'm not a purist when it comes to vintage hardware. If I can, I put in modern equivalents to minimize speed issues and temperamental old parts. I believe it's meant to be enjoyed, not constantly being repaired or troubleshooted. Some people would rather put this stuff on a shelf for preservation, but my enjoyment comes from using them.

    Great project/innovation!!
    Keep them coming Brad

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Pondering the display for the build. With the VidHD card it requires a 1080p native resolution panel. I'm finding that transparent displays are known as "prison tvs". Getting a chuckle out of my search history on ebay lately.

I'm thinking the RCA 13" SecureView TV will be what I pick.

I have not heard RCA in a long time. With out a doubt that will fit your clear theme perfect.

lol "Prison TV", "Introducing the new RCA SecureView Series HD TV with a see-through clear cabinet that allows a complete view of the entire contents of the set’s interior, including electronic circuitry"

Maybe so no one can hide or smuggle stuff in the TV itself? I guess they got caught to many times using cakes.....

Either way, this machine is coming together nicely.

Dug around a bit to see what mouse options might go good with this build. Not very many transparent mouse options out there. The easy pick would have been one of the single button Macintosh mouse as this is an Apple themed build, but I want a 2 mouse button option at least. I expanded my search a bit and decided to go with a transparent trackball. Not a fan of the blue tint on the clear case, but not many clear mouse options that are functional out there.

I have not seen a track ball in a long time. Never could get used to them lol. To bad you could not place LEDs inside the blue tinted mouse / trackpad, if the computer and the mouse lit the same color it could hide the clear plastic difference.
