Recently just scored a 3080 XC3 Ultra from microcenter and despite being a beast in gaming should I worry about its thermals? On Idle the card is around 60-66C and then on load the card runs around 77-83C. This is on the default fan curve and with a more aggressive on I can get it at 77C at around 90% fan speed at load.

Below is a pic of my current fan setup. There is a missing fan because I am waiting for my new corsair fan to come in. When I did the testing I had all corsair fans and one fan that came with the Lian Li case where the missing fan would be. All fans are 120m

Your temperatures are normal. XC3s run hot, much hotter than FTW3s.

Maybe it is my eyes, but why does it look like every fan exhaust is mostly covered by a grill and filters that would block most of the airflow out of the case?  Also I agree that giant aircoolers need to disappear. They are basically incompatible with getting optimal GPU performance.

May be edging more on the warmer side(imo) but nothing I'd be frantically worried about. What's your ambient room temp? Could introduce better CFM fans or orientate them differently in your case. Can play around with different Positive airflow configurations.

My suggestion is to add one more fan in the front, even if part of the PSU shroud is blocking it.  The way the airflow looks in that case, there isn't much going under the card to provide fresh air.  You have a total of 5 fans as exhaust/directional pull towards the exhaust (Noctua air cooler), which is probably pulling all the fresh air from the 2 case-front fans leaving little for the 3080.  Experiment by adding one.  If you don't have one, experiment by moving the middle one down and see if the temps are lowered.  Just my observation.

You're not getting anywhere CLOSE to 65'C with an XC3 using auto fan at maximum load. 75-80'C is the best you will do. If you want lower you need to manually increase the fan, period.

"65'C gaming" means nothing to anybody, just means youre playing a game that isn't putting the card under full load.

UPDATE:
I recently got my 3rd Corsair LL120 fan for that empty slot in the front bottom of my case. Overall temperatures didn't change at all. I'm still sitting around 60 idle and 80 at load. I hope its nothing to be worried about

As my other posts have indicated, you're doing about as well as you can do with the XC3. Anybody who replies differently doesn't understand the thermal performance difference between XC3 and FTW3.

I have learned to live with my XC3 at around 78c. I can get it to around 74c, but while being loud, so I will tolerate the heat.

Edit: Disregard my post.. I thought you said XC3 black which is what I have. Whoops.

I think the CPU cooler is blocking the hot exhaust of the card. I have the same card overclocked 80 mhz and am able to keep it at 65-68C with a custom fan curve going from 80% at 60 degrees to 85% at 80 degrees. My case has excellent airflow though (intake below card + in front of card with the exhaust above it and there is nothing blocking the top of the card. I believe the card even has exhaust ports on the top that may be being blocked. 80C is still okay though.

So it turns out that this was actually not normal at all. Fans 1 and 2 on the XC3 cards have been running way under speed due to driver issues. The latest version of EVGA precision X (1.1.1) fixes this problem. My card now idles at 45 degrees instead of 65. Celeras, it turns out, was full of crap. :)

Mine idles 30-32c and gets up near 70 under full load. It is a hotter card but as others have said your case setup probably isn't doing you any favors.

It's dark, but it looks like you have a small card (audio, usb ports or something else?) that is rather close to the 3080 fan that's nearest the back of the PC. Looks like that fan on the GPU is not breathing well. With 3 fans, I don't know how much this contributes to your temps.

I upgraded from EVGA 2080S XC Ultra. Right after install new card I played few games and max temp was around mid 80. I noticed something is wrong because 2080S max temp was around low 70. Check few things and realize I should've update X1,firmware. I did it and temp during gaming max 76. I set the fan curve as stealth it is now 70~72 on gaming. I guess temp lowered because of recent cold weather in ATL. My BF got me this card via EVGA queue system right before thanksgiving. So happy with it.
My set up: Corsair 220T case,  R7 3700x with Fuma2 air cooler

Hi, I think your temperatures are high in IDLE because on the nvidia control panel your power management must be set to high performance... change it to optimized then reboot.

Sorry for my english, i'm french

This.

I had ProcLasso set to "highest performance" on power plan, and power management in NVidia Control Panel was also set to "performance."
Card idled at 50-60c at 1750Mhz.

Changed to "balanced" power plan in both and now it idles about 30c at 200some Mhz.

Re: RTX 3080 XC3 Ultra Running Hot 2020/12/14 12:30:32 (permalink)
Hello,

I bought this card in late November for a new build using the Ncase M1 v6.1 (latest model) along with a 5800x cpu.
This is a small case, around 13-14 liters and installation of all parts was tricky; everything is very compact.

CPU is cooled with NZXT Kraken x53. Below the GPU I have two slim 120mm fans pulling air into the GPU.

I have to say, this card runs cooler than my 1080 in a ATX mid-tower case with many more fans.

I came here originally because I was having high temps on the GPU, similar to OP. Under load, it was hitting as high as 86c. Using GPU-Z I could see the GPU was throttling due to temperature.
However, this was solely due to the fact that I was stupid and installed the bottom intake fans backwards, essentially blowing the same hot air back at the GPU. Once reversed, my GPU goes no higher than 70c under full load (tested playing Cyberpunk ultra preset with dlss on varying qualities).

If this card runs hot I truly believe it's an airflow issue. This ITX case is delivering amazing temps--beyond my expectations.

Edit: I should also mention that I have the GPU overclocked and am very consistently clocking at ~2050mhz with mem clock at ~10400mhz. Power maxed at 108% with voltage increased by about 50 mvs.

If anyone actually believes you can lower your temperatures 16'C by turning around a single case fan, then send me a DM I have a bridge to sell you

[edit] and as you can see below, he isn't even using the autofan profile and clearly doesn't understand what is being discussed. Of course you can get temperatures lower by manually increasing the fan...

You don't have to believe it; I don't care. Just reporting my experience just incase it helps anyone here.

Edit: This isn't one fan, it's two and is a significant portion of the cooling of this case. Other than the bottom chassis fans, the only other fans are intakes for the cpu pump radiator. Essentially half of the cooling of this case and for the GPU, the only cooling other than the GPU fans on the card.

Also, with the fans installed the wrong way, I was likely getting worse temps than if I didn't have those fans installed at all. Again, it was just keeping hot air on the GPU. It's entirely possible to have one or two fans preventing proper airflow depending on your case.
Fan curve is moderate, and I could likely lower it a bit to reduce some noise, but have not done testing and it's not a priority for me.

Your evga its very close to the cpu cooler. you should direct fans pushing air out of the case. Improve air flow
