He doesn't need an SSD if he has the latest VelociRaptor. That is one of the fastest mechanical HDs out there.

When I was in the USA APC built very good surge protectors. I don't know if they still have insurance protection on them though.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

Just bought a APC SurgeArrest Performance Series, and is considered a very good one to have. The Surg protector will protect even when you turn the unit off as I have been doing to save a little bit of energy.

    3400 Joules
    11 Outlets
Phone/Fax/Modem Protection ( Have heard that the modem maybe affected with slow downs with it connected, so I just leave it unconnected)
    Coax Line Protection

$100,000 lifetime connected equipment protection when you register it.

    Italy's Banchetto 101 (Open Air)

    Mobo eVGA
    780i
    CPU E8400
    PWR Suply Corsair HX1000
    Memory 8 GB Corsair
    Video Card eVGA 295 GTX
    Monitor Dell 3007
    HDD VelociRaptor
    OS Windows 7 64 bit

If it ain't broke... fix it until it is.

All surge protectors work regardless whether you have the main power switch on or off.

If you want to be serious about surge protection for your equipment, installation of a whole house surge protector is mandatory followed up by point of use surge protectors.  Here are pics of the SquareD unit I installed in my service panel.

Panamax is another good brand.  Like above, I installed Panamax's GPP8005 whole house surge protector.  I also have point of use protectors.  I live in Central FL, lighting capital of the USA.

Also consider surge protection on your phone line, DSL lines, ethernet conenctions, cable, etc.  A surge can damage your PC from those connection too, not just via the power cord.

It's a good idea to get a unit that displays it's protection status.  Some of the devices (e.g MOV's) inside the unit that absorb a surge may be damaged in the process and lose their ability to provide protection in the future.  This can occur without you noticing.  Some sort of "protection ok" indicator may help identify "used" protection.
