It doesn't really matter too much, but the prefer maximum performance will keep the card from dropping below base clock.

    How I have mine set...

Global settings power management mode = Adaptive.

Power management mode for each game under program settings = Prefer maximum performance.

Why adaptive for global? To keep the card from running at base clocks while web browsing. Why not optimal power for global? Optimal power could cause screen corruption while idling since optimal power reuses the same frame over & over again from the framestore.

Adaptive. There was a long stretch of Nvidia drivers that caused crashes with the default of optimal on my system.

Quite a few people are not aware of this but if you check in the profiles tab for each game/application you will see that Windows WDM  (Windows Desktop Manager) is set to adaptive by default by the driver as are Explorer.exe, Windows Shell Experience..etc etc...  So by default the desktop is running in adaptive mode. However, applications are typically set to run at optimal by default. I may experiment with running FF on adaptive for awhile to see if it eliminates the 1/2 second or so black screen flash I get every once in awhile...but never gaming.
