Has anyone ever try this?
Trying to repair a broken PCIe slot

After almost 3 weeks without my PC and tinkering around with it i have finally narrowed it down to the main PCI-E slot being dead.

I'm just curious if anyone has tried it and was successful

Looks to me like its gonna be a really hard thing to do, correctly at least... Is your board out warranty? And if so guess why not, if there's nothing else you can do with it, its worth the try!

If the pins are re-soldered back in the original position and theres no damage to the board itself, should work in theory.

Physically, there is no difference between a PCIE 1.0 slot or 2.0 slot.

It is possible, with the correct tools this is a pretty easy job. If your trying to repair a broken (as in cracked) PCI-E, PCI, RAM slot or anything in that nature you will need.....

A heat gun (about $24.00 at walmart).
An oven mitt.
Some pliers.
About an hour of time and lots of patience.

For this guide I will be using a regular PCI slot, but a PCI-E will be about the same.

Taking the slot off is the easy part, putting the new on is a royal pain sometimes..

Heatgun. Low setting is ~750°F  High is ~1000°f. For this guide we will be using the "high" setting.

Heres my test subject.

Turn the board over and blast it with the heatgun with zig-zagged motions for about a minute.

Quickly turn the board over and give it a small tug with the pliers, don't bump the board because capacitors and other things can fall off.

Let the board cool off for 1-2min and then hit it again with the heatgun. This last time the slot should come off.

These last steps are the hardest part...If your going to mess up (ruin the board) its going to be here, so be careful.

Line up the pins of your new slot with the contacts on the board and put on your oven mitt.

Gently press down on the slot and begin heating the back of the board again and work the slot in until its full seated. The board is going to get hot as hell and burn like a ----- but whatever you do don't drop it. Remember to take small breaks in between heating the board up if you don't get it fully seated the first time.
