just installed the 306.97's from the nvidia.co.uk website and noticed the taskbar icon isnt there anymore, also noticed this with the last betas, this normal ?

I just installed them and I have the NVIDIA taskbar icon. Right click on the desktop and see if the NVIDIA control panel is there.

Check MSCONFIG startup tab to see if you have NVIDIA driver.

I do not have it either. The NVidia control panel is now available on the Desktop right click menu instead. The tray icon is a Windows XP feature only apparently: NVidia Control Panel Users Guide Look on page 13 under "View Menu Commands" Some other posts that I have seen suggest it is limited to 32 bit Windows systems only.

I have this icon still (win7 x64 here) ... driver works fine for me, however NV System Information reports my 670 card as running x16 Gen2 while GPU-Z says it runs x16 PCIe3.0 ... slight inconsistency  so far no trouble with it however, even benchmarks are pretty much same, so I guess no real trouble

I never use the tray icon anyway, but come to think of it I have not noticed it at all since I created a fresh Windows 7 64 bit environment.
I wonder if the tray icon is a remnant of older drivers.

nope, I have it on a fresh installed win 7 x64. I believe I used 306.23 WHQL initially, however I did then revert back to 301 WHQL to get Lucid MVP working and then back to 306.23 and then to latest 306.xx LOL! bottom line is, I think that icon was always there since fresh install a few weeks ago. I don't use it either ;)

I just finished uninstalling the driver. Removed everything NVidia related, folders and registry settings, and re-installed 306.97 with the perform clean install option enabled.
Still no icon and also no option in the control panel for a tray icon, the same as the original poster. I am running on a GTX 680.
But as I said: I cannot remember ever seeing it since I did a fresh install of Win 7. I do not miss it either, just wondering what's up!

OK so if you right click on an empty space on your desktop screen do you see NVIDIA Control Panel?

Last time I had a Tray icon for nvidia drivers was when I was still on XP, Soon I switched to win 7 it was gone, and hasnt been there since. I could swore this was common knowledge too.
taskbar tray icon and right click on desktop menu are not the same, The taskbar icon let you do more. I kinda miss it made switching from monitor to hdtv easier, but then windows has window key +p now. Only computer that still has that taskbar icon is my xp computer

Was your questions directed at me or the original poster? I do have the NVidia Control Panel option on the desktop context menu (right click menu on the desktop), yes.

I have the right click desktop option but the tray icon isnt there, my friend has the tray icon on his rig and his sytem is pretty much the same as mine, win 7 and all, quite strange :-/

I have never seen the tray icon either in the lower task bar. Also read it was a XP thing. I have even done fresh installs of Windows 7 on this machine. I do have the right click control panel option though when right clicking any where on the desktop.

I dont think its just a windows xp feature as i had the icon 2 driver sets ago on this very machine with windows 7 64 bit :-/

I have the latest driver and can still enable my tray icon, but I never use it. GeForce GTX 680M here on Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit (SP1) with 306.97 drivers. The setting to enable the tray icon appears in the desktop menu via nVidia Control Panel:
Add Desktop Context Menu
Show Notification Tray Icon
Add "Run with graphics processor" to Context Menu
Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area
Whenever I install nVidia drivers, I choose the clean install option to get rid of any potential bugs the old drivers may have.

I did a clean install of windows 7 literally 4 hours ago and the only option i have is "Add Desktop Context Menu" you must have magic drivers :P

The NVidia taskbar icon is only present in Windows 7 if the NVidia GeForce experience update software is correctly installed.
