I currently have 3 GTX 580's in 3 way SLI and I am running 3 monitors for surround. I would like to add a fourth monitor for an extra display, not for gaming. I'd like to be able to see temp monitoring programs etc. while I'm gaming. I know that plugging the extra monitor into one of my 580's will not work, I've already tried that. What I want to know is if anyone has tried it by adding another video card just to drive the extra display. So for example 3 580's in 3 way SLI and a GT 430 or something similar in the 4th PCI-E slot. Will this work? I have read conflicting reports on this topic. I would like to hear from someone that has tried it. So if anyone has any experience with this, any info would be appreciated.

For anyone who reads this thread and cares, I ended up borrowing a 9600gt from a friend and tried it. 3 580's in 3 way SLI in surround and a 9600gt with a fourth monitor plugged in to it DOES NOT work. I cannot activate the fourth display no matter what I try. In the NVCP There is a check box next to the display connected to the 9600, but I cannot check it to activate the display. So it seems this does not work at this time.

Thanks for the update as I am interested in this as well.  I'm running a triple SLI GTX 260 setup with 3 1920x1200 monitors and wish to add another to show other information or to have a small touch screen.  I am also considering getting some of the 3GB GTX 580's if / when they arrive.  Do you think an HX1000 would be enough for triple 580s?

    Cheers

Hey no problem. I'm glad I was able to try it before going out and buying another card. As far as an HX1000 for 3 way 580's, Nvidia doesn't have it on their certified PSU list. It looks like they recommend at least 1200 watts. You can check it out here:

The AX1200 is an excellent choice if you do decide to go 3 way 580's. With a single rail 100A design it's a perfect PSU for 3 power hungry cards. With a single rail you don't have to worry about distributing the cards across rails.

Hello alll, Came by this thread as i was looking to to the same thing.

There is one thing i believe that might help. I don't have the extra card to try it yet, So please if anyone with the setup or access to the extra card could please give this ago.

Anyway, Before setting up the surround with the three displays, Try disabling the extra card, That way it won't know to suppress it once its activated, I do believe its possible to get the fourth display working through some means.

I brought a Mimo 7" usb display and can confirm that this method also doesn't work. Running 3 monitors on SLI. When I try to enable the 4th display it make the SLI go mad.

It's a real pain in the arse as I also wanted temps and stuff on the little screen.

In case anyone is still interested, I HAVE managed to get this working.
    My current set-up has 2x GTX470s and one GT430 powering 5 screens.
I have 3x 22" 1920x1080 monitors plugged into the GTX470s (that ARE running in surround), a 47" tv @ 1920x1080 plugged into the GT430 and a 10.2" display @ 600x1024 showing stats that is also plugged into the GT430

    And it all works! :D
I've put some screens to show what I've got:

    I hope that's helped :)

I installed the GT430, whilst having SLI turned off, let it install all the drivers, then attached the extra screens and selected surround
To start off with it disabled the screens in the GT430 but it let me enable them through the windows control panel (I haven't tried enabling the screens through the nvidia control panel) and it all worked fine 1st time.
It could be something to do with the fact I'm using a lower GPU from the same series, I don't know, so a GT520 may work with GTX580s

Sorry I can't be much more help than that :/
