The stock Northbridge heatsink is in the way of putting in a tv tuner card (really just that protrusion that points towards the pci slots is in the way). Has anyone used an aftermarket heatsink and can recommend one? I have the 760 board. I was thinking of the thermalright hr 05 ifx as a replacement. has anyone used this heatsink?

Are all of your other PCI-E slots full or otherwise obstructed so that you cannot use them?

The PCI-E x 1 TV tuner card does not have to be placed in the top slot if other slots are available.  It will work in any PCI-E slot (although maybe a little funny looking) which means you can place it in any of the available PCI-E x 16 slots and thus bypass the issue with the northbridge heatsink.

That top PCI-Ex1 slot is very limited in relation to what cards can fit up there.  You are mostly limited to a certain number of sound cards.

Not that simple. You have an ICH too and other chips on that heatsink. The only reasonable option is to watercool.

I've used the HR-05 IFX on an Asus P6T X58 board and it is incredibly effective with just passive cooling, dropped my NB temps at least 10C under load.  The 760 heatsink is very high quality however, so I would not expect as much difference on the Classified, but it would address the clearance issue you're concerned about.

I would also agree with Ty_ger07 and just use any of the other PCIex16 slots first unless you're out of slots or you want to try and keep everything at x16 for 2-way SLI.  I'm currently in a similar situation because my x1 sound card doesn't fit in the top slot and using it drops my two main PCIEx16 slot bandwidth down to x8/x8.

Here's a pic I have uploaded to give you an idea of what the IFX looks like mounted on my P6T, I'm not positive there's enough clearance on the 760 due to slight board layout differences, but there should be.  Basically, as long as you don't have anything crossing the vertical plane of the green chipset package, you should be in the clear.

760 NB cooler only covers the X58 and the ICH10R, no NF200 to worry about.  There's also a separate heatsink for one of the VRMs.  You can buy a flat SB cooler for ~$13 and there's mounting holes there too, but realistically, you can just run that SB uncovered as it doesn't even get warm under normal use.

Depends what you call "normal" use. With no airflow whatsoever, the 760 NB will be around 60C, higher on load. The NB will be scalding hot to the touch, and if you touched the "classified' lettering covering the ICH, it will burn you too.

Ya the NB definitely needs cooling, that's what the HR-05 is for.  The SB can be left uncovered and cooled passively, if it was hot to the touch it was most likely due to the NB conducting heat to it via the heatpipe.  ICH10R is uncovered on many production boards, including most server and workstation boards which are more I/O intensive than your average destkop.

thanks for all the info. these forums are a true gold mine.

for now i am just going to plug the tuner into one of the pci-e x16 slots as i'm just running 1 vid card atm.

in the future i will be doing 2way sli with the evga 295 and will want to keep 16x but i also plan to water cool when i get to that point as i plan on running them hot so i'll just get a block for my bridge/chipsets at that point along with my cpu and vid cards.

I used the HR-05 IFX on my E756 micro and it fit.  I think the mounting system is poorly designed - the screws and nuts are too long and prevent the heatsink from lining up perpendicular to the NB and may prevent a fan from being mounted.  But it does conduct heat.
