Quick question here on PCIe Gen5... The specs of the board state that it supports Gen5, however when you look at the manual it seems that’s only supported on the two main PCIe slots, everything else only supports Gen4? All the M2 slots specifically state Gen4... Wondering if this is a ‘typo’ or perhaps it’s BIOS related (like the latest BIOS enable Gen5 support for M2)?

Cheers.

Not a typo.

In the description, it says "...PCIe Gen5, and PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSDs."

I think it's a chipset limitation. If you look at Intel's chipset diagram for z690:

It shows there are only gen5 lanes available for the PCIe slots. The 4x lanes directly from the CPU for an M.2 are gen4. there are also no gen5 lanes to/from the chipset.

Same for z790 actually...just more lanes:

Thanks... you’re right it’s an Intel limitation, only AMD (AM5) has support for Gen5 SSDs :-(

There are several companies working on PCIe slot SSD adaptor cards that would allow you to get gen5 speeds on your z690 board, but you'd have to lose the GPU or run both slots in x8 mode. Depending on the card, that may be totally fine for you, but it all depends on what you're doing. Also, when I looked a couple weeks ago for someone else on the forums here, I couldn't find any of those adapter cards for sale yet. Several have been announced over the last few months, so I would think they'll be on the market soon.
