At the moment there is sod-all difference in real-world performance between running cards at x16 x16,x8x8, or even x4x4.

Of course, technology is always improving and games are becoming more graphically intense, relying more on the cpu than ever before, so x79 with more than twice as many PCIE lanes makes sense.

Also the 6xx Kepler series of nVidia cards is not too far (3-6months) away from release, which are supposedly going to be far more power efficient and powerful than the current 5xx series.

Were I you, I'd wait for x79 and for the time being grab something like this (2gb GTX 560 sc) which will game perfectly well on a single screen, and will make a great physics card if/when you upgrade to a 6xx series card/s.

BUT, with that said, I didn't really pay attention to your system specs. You should just get a new video card and wait for the X79.

Jason I'm in the same boat as you are, except I'm waiting for my old rig to be sold to a friend (hopefully).  Gunner said about the same thing that Rain is saying. If you can wait til late November then just wait, I was confused because I thought the x79 was coming in November and the Intel E's were coming next year but that isn't the case. I just ordered a 580 Classy until the new sh!t comes out.

Yea rig is sold I am having to build from the ground up... besides a few small items that I did keep.. MCP 350, Fesser 480 quad and some more WC parts.. odds and ends...

The HD6990 is the solution to limited PCI-E lanes.

About the PCI-E lanes being limited to 8x8x on PCI-E 2.0... You should really read into this:
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/08/25/gtx_480_sli_pcie_bandwidth_perf_x16x16_vs_x4x4/

my system spec are sold sig rig anyway.. I have to build ground up..
good read.. The difference is not that much.. so how I see it and understand it. the current MOBO I have chosen will run 1 card in x16, and the other card in x8? Least thats how I am reading it.. please correct me if I am wrong :) That is plenty for me for the time being. If its going to last me at least until Ivy is released then I will be happy.. Maybe I should just grab the 6970's as well and just hold on on the 580's until I get a IVY platform?

You can get an i7 2600K or i7 2700K right now, then upgrade to a i7 3700K later when they release Ivy Bridge.

Also, with AMD, you don't have to have the exact same model to run in crossfire. So you can crossfire a HD6990 and a HD6970 or even a HD6950. Just make sure you have a decent PSU behind it... I'm still waiting for a review on the Kingwin LZP-1000, but if it comes out as expected, that's what i'd get.

Intel i9 10900K
MSI MEG Z490 ACE
ASUS TUF RTX 3090
32GB G.Skill Trident Z Royal 4000MHz CL18
SuperFlower Platinum SE 1200w
Samsung EVO 970 1TB and Crucial P5 1TB
Cougar Vortex CF-V12HPB x9

Thinking 2 6970's in xFire. with that 850W psu from corsair and the i7 2600k. this will allow me to grab a corsair H100 to cool the CPU and still be under my 2k limit... thoughts on that idea??

Yeah, the Corsair HX850 should have you covered, that's what I would get, even over the AX850.

The HX850 actually regulates power slightly better. The AX850 is fully modular over the HX850 that is mostly modular. The AX850 has better cable sleeving, but that does not effect performance, just aesthetics.

Also the AX850's fan doesn't spin until it has to, although the HX850 is said to be quiet anyway.

Looks good, except the $100 non-mechanical keyboard.  For the same price you can get a mechanical keyboard from Razer or someone else, with all of the additional features of the Logitech.  That steel/plastic case also costs more than the Lian-Li PC-A70F, which is all aluminum, has more storage plus better tool free designs but oh well.  You should like the rig.  Any plans for a third monitor in the future?

I have always been partial to logitech.. I had a razor mouse and just hated it.. KB from razor also.. 4 keys turned to crap after like 7 months of use... it was like pulling teeth to get an RMA so I sold both for dirt cheap... The case I really like even though there are cheaper out there. The KB form logitech was very smooth for me.. fits me... I do have plans for a 3rd monitor... that will depends on how well these cards handle an OC.. if they do I will most likely water cool them in a separate loop... which is basically there already... also I will add a 3rd card if I do that... maybe... I am going to be waiting for IVY to drop before I do another major upgrade. CPU, memory, GPU etc.. is major..

I would get the EVGA Z68 FTW from EVGA.com
http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=160-SB-E689-KR&family=Motherboard%20Family&series=Intel%20Z68%20Series%20Family&sw=5

That is the board I was originally going to grab when I started this build... I <3 EVGA very much.. that will be the next video cards, and MOBO I grab for my next updated build... IVY.. when ever it's released.
