According to specifications of the GTX 1060 6 GB GDDR5X put out by Palit, the GDDR5X version is a little more than a marketing stunt, with something in there for overclockers. The GTX 1060 GamingPro OC+ from Palit is by no means a "baseline" product. It features 6 GB of GDDR5X memory, which ticks at 8800 MHz (GDDR5X effective), and continues to have a 192-bit wide memory interface. At this speed, the GPU ends up with 211.2 GB/s of memory bandwidth. I personally don't see enough improvement in this revised product to make it worthwhile.

If they wanted to produce an updated product, seems like they would have used a higher level chip (1070-1080Ti) and GDDR6.  5X seems kinda half-hearted.  Maybe it was a memory controller issue or maybe Nvidia wouldn't let them for fear of competing with the 20 series in rasterization.

Edit:  Completely missed that it was actually Nvidia releasing the product.  I'm so used to looking at the aftermarket cards that I just see them as the chip producer.

Nvidia has GDDR5X they need to get sell. The GTX 1060 is Nvidia's best selling card, so this is a good way to sell the GDDR5X memory.

Wasn't questioning you, I was just surprised.  This is the only computer related forum I go to unless it's the occasional outside link that someone posts. It seems that most regular posters are enthusiasts with higher end cards, so to me, the norm is 70 and 80.

It’s their best seller as it hits the largest portion of the market. Not everyone can afford the enthusiast cards like some of us. :)

Equally so, not many people need such a powerful card, or even have knowledge past “will it play Fortnite?” :D

Well if you play @1080p you don't need higher tiers which are for higher resolutions.

10 series was pretty expensive too.
