Dang doa. That is nasty as heck. Just seeing that truck maybe me worry even more of those who were in it. And then I read it was BOTH of your parents made me feel even worse. Because I know how it is to feel that you may lose your parents. I am so sorry for this to have happened to your family. I will keep you and your family in my prayers and I hope for the best for you all! =/

Glad to here they are OK (Compared to what could have been). Before any bashers come in... Until you experience your own incident like this you always think Black Ice is manageable. Then you hit a patch just right and find you in fact have zero control. The scary part is how much speed you pick up as soon as you hit it... Then a roll over happens a lot of the time. And is a major reason for the Roll over ratings... Age, experience, tires, vehicles types all make minimal difference on black ice. I have seen quite a few chained and also studded vehicles with the same results...

My father has been driving for 50 years in the Iowa winter climate without EVER having an accident but, when it comes to black ice there isn't much that can be done... Thanks for all the kind words everyone! It's going to be a long recovery but, a long recovery is better than a quick funeral EVERY time!

Do you think a roll cage or bar would have helped? I once saw a Ram roll over and the whole top came off like aluminium foil. I want a truck, but I'm afraid something like this could happen, and after seeing what happened to that Ram, I always wonder if a roll bar/cage would have help the roof on.

Done correctly absolutely. Just a bar no. The issue is what has to be removed in order to make a real cage after manufacturing. Not to mention the obstruction it makes for the Airbags and our heads in an impact. While it can be done, to do it right cost big bucks... I will say this... Evey single Jeep I have ever owned has been taken to my friends shop and had a Roll-cage built in. He builds Baja rigs...

Once you put a vehicle into a position where it's uncontrollable, it's going to go where it wants to regardless of what you do.

Glad they are going to be ok DOA. I have seen countless trucks take similar damage from roll over accidents. The cab roof supports just cant handle the forces of impact placed upon it. Why auto makers never did anything to make trucks safer by including even a basic hidden roll cage to keep the roof from collapsing is beyond me.

I wish the cage was a factory option. I know they can be expensive, but if you've got the money, your life is worth it. Maybe in the future standards will improve and vehicles will be strong enough and not need them. I was in a similar accident a few years back, my mother's spine was dust yet she didn't get paralyzed at all. I saw the X-Rays, her being able to walk is miraculous. Hopefully after your parents recuperate, they will enjoy life and live it to the fullest. My mother isn't a total downer, but I wish she would think about how she could be in a chair for the rest of her life instead of in pain. Pain sucks, but at least it lets you know you're still alive.

Hope your parents are on a speedy recovery with minimal amounts of pain! Forget the truck, it's the people who matter in accidents. There's not black ice where I live in california, but we do have a lot of oil in the ground when it rains due to so much traffic and I've seen accidents like this except on crowded freeways where this truck would have taken all the small cars out around it. Good luck to you and your parents during recovery!

Black ice is no joke, the only thing you can do is prey, if you believe in that stuff. I hit that stuff once myself, luckily the only thing I hit was a snow bank and just had to get pulled out of it. Looking at the photo's, it looks like the cab protected them, good job on Ford for the design. When I was in Japan one of my Marines got in a rollover accident, the whole front cap was smashed, somehow, I don't know how, she survived with nothing more than a sprained wrist and some scratches. Hope your parents get well soon.
