So I hear pretty much nothing but good things about Mushkin redline I tried Mushkin a few times and well I was not impressed with the way the heat-syncs do not stay on they would slide around when installing. Anyway which would overclock better Mushkin blackline or Mushkin redline? Or would they pretty much be the same but one simply needing looser timings? Typically I would go with 2000 mem but like I said I hear a lot of good things about Mushkin redline 1600. Thanks.

Everyone is going to say Redlines but I'm using Blacklines and I can get them to much tighter timings on lower voltage than I thought. I say go with the Blacklines.

I'm running Redline 2000mhz 8 8 7 @ 1650(ish) 6 6 6 20. Pretty good, stable RAM. I like mine and would definitely recommend getting it, No experience with blacklines so I can't really tell you about them. ....Only problem is when I checked newegg a few days ago to link them to a friend they were discontinued.. Only 2000mhz mushkin ram I saw was blacklines.

Well I am looking to get pc 12800 (1600) and wanting to know how much different the redline and blackline perform/overclock. Going to get one of them. Seems redline will be the winner.

Go redlines, they just sound cool. Plus they're 154 after MIR, can't beat that.

I know the question was Redline or Blackline however ditto on the last post. http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16820226124 Memory like CPUs is a crap shoot when it comes to overclocking you might get lucky with any of the above. With Mushkin typically the Redlines are there top binned modules if that helps with your decision but the ridgebacks are known for value and overclock ability a bang for the buck sort of thing. You should keep in mind though overclocking the memory produces little gain in noticeable/palpable performance sure your bandwidth might increase but nothing will replace overclocking the CPU or GPU in terms of realizing big gains. Most will clock the heck out of the later and keep memory at 1600-2000 speeds with tightest timings and a 1t command rate, where arguably you'll see the best performance. Those rigdebacks start out better because of the low latency rating at 1t. Mushkin or not the lower the case at a given speed the better the module. Good Luck!

EXCELLENT explanation !! Very well put. @ the OP : I just purchased the red lines . Why ? Well, the lowest latency I could find in the red lines for one and the main reason is ... this forum. Yup.... this forum has the BEST info and most honest recollection of peoples experiences with all sorts of products. Therefore I choose my ram mostly on the fact that Kmoore swears by them and that was good enough for me ! P.S. ... Note to self.... You watch all my Red Lines come in DOA cause I said the above !! I'm obviously very curious how the individual testing the memory's overclock comes to selecting the timings. Is it part of a scientific process, where they know ok at 2350 I'll go with 9-11-9-29 or is it purely trial and error?

Thanks everyone. @sirjames I am thinking it is trial and error. But I also suppose there be some kind of formula to use if you have all the information of the module in question.

Is it part of a scientific process, where they know ok at 2350 I'll go with 9-11-9-29 or is it purely trial and error? The silicon wafers are stressed to failure then cut down to chips and tested again in an Ambyx oven which reveals there bin which is then laser etch on the part an then placed on a PCB by the chip mfg. or so called mfg like Corsair and OCZ. Micron, Hynix, Samsung, Toshiba, & Crucial are some of the real chip mfg.. Of course my explanation here is way oversimplified but it's the general idea. here's a couple sources that might help, http://www.computer-memor.../computermemory_42.htm http://www.semidice.com/ourPartners/micron.asp

Is there a scientific method involved or is it just trial and error?

Trial and error , one step at a time. you can figure out a set of optimal timings in an evening.
