Hi,

As some might know there's a problem with the 2D clocks with what seems to be the geforce drivers that doesn’t support normal 2d clocks with multiple monitors? As of now, my card stays at 888Mhz with the memory on full overclock which means that the fans have to run at almost 40% and the card sits around at 42-45 degrees.

Is there any way to fix this? A quick google search seemed to indicate that you either had to make some weird .bat files with one for forced 2d and another one for forced 3d, sort of k-boost solution. Another guy suggested that you’d buy a cheap video card to use for 2d apps. Is there any other work around available?

What model card do you have?  Make sure you don't have "Prefer max Performance" set in your global settings in the manage 3D settings.  It would be in the "Power Management mode" setting.  You'd want this to be set to the default of "Adaptive".

It's currently set to default which is adaptive. I have 780 Classy with v3 of skyn3t's custom bios.

Ok.  I'm thinking then because you're using a custom BIOS on your card, is why it won't go down to idle clock speed.  I know on my 780Ti, (factory bios) I can run 3 monitors on an idle desktop, and the clock speed drops to 324MHz (idle clock speed).  That's my guess anyway.  Even on my 670's I could run multiple monitors at idle clocks.

The only way around this that I know of is what you mentioned already.  Using Nvidia Inspector and creating a special .bat file etc...

yeah, well this problem only occured when i connected a second monitor, even on sky's bios, so i think it's more related to the drivers not working as properly intended with multiple monitors. It's not a huge problem but quite annoying. thanks for your reply though! hoping someone else has a solution to this without creating .bat files :/

Well, like I mentioned above and FWIW, I can run 2 or even 3 monitors off either my 780Ti or my 670 FTW's, and both cards will clock down to the 2D clock speed of 324MHz with an idle desktop.  These are not in surround, but independently.

But GL & hope you get it figured out...

Well, I found out last night that the card downclock itself when i set my main monitor to 60Hz instead of 120hz. Any idea why it won't downclock when it's running on a higher refresh rate?

It should not have anything to do with the mod bios you are running. I have his bios on both my ti's and they downclock to 324 no problem. I am using two monitors as well.

It has to do with the higher refresh rate, not the amount of monitors, it does it with mine as well with my Yamakasi (OC PCB) and TV.

So, question remains then... why does my card refuse to go down to 2d clocks? Also, isn't it somewhat unsafe to run the card with full memory oc 100% of the time?

It's not unsafe to run your card at max clocks.  It would be the same as enabling K-boost which isn't harmful from what I've read.

If I was in your situation, I would 1st uninstall PrecX.  Make sure when asked to save data & profiles, you answer NO.  Then re-boot your system.  Once back in Windows, uninstall your graphics driver and anything else Nvidia.

Make sure you have Windows update disabled and re-boot again.  Now re-install the graphics driver.  Do a custom install and only install graphics & PhysX.  If you game in 3D, then install those features.  Don't install the GFE or Audio drivers or anything else.  Put a check mark in the "clean" install box for good measure.

Once the install is done, reboot your system again.  See how that works out.  If you're good so far, re-install PrecX.

Allright, I will try that. Nvidia drivers are always a mess anyways so wouldn't be surprised if your tutorial would fix the problem for me, should have though of that, thanks! :)

Nope, even before installing the new drivers the card was at the same clock speed... So no difference sadly :/ At this point I think it's the drivers not really compatible with my AOC monitor... I'm out of other guesses.

Yeah, I think you're right.  It could just be that some 120/144Hz monitors use more GPU power causing the increased clock speeds.  I don't know what else it could be since it isn't the same for everyone across the board.

My 144Hz monitor keeps my 780Ti from downclocking all the way. However, I use the lightboost hack and at 120Hz my card downclocks.

I also run a 144 hz monitor , and have a secondary 60 hz monitor, and mine only downclocks to like 736 mhz. If I reduce the monitor to 120 hz it will downclock a little further, but not as far as it normally would...

Heck of it is, when running say 3D Mark 11, then it will downclock all the say - when it is running the cpu test...

Re: Is there any good way to downclock my card in 2D mode? Multiple monitors prohibts that 2014/02/15 07:18:09 (permalink)
From what I know, it's a factor of resolution & refresh rate (pixel clock). But a lower pixel clock doesn't necessarily guarantee it will downclock.

For those of you running the 1440p monitors at 100Hz+, you can get it to downclock if you play with the timings. Mine was fixed by setting a minimum vertical pixel count of 1458 whereas before I used 1445. It now downclocks to 324MHz by itself.

Multiple monitors may be a separate issue, and if you aren't creating custom resolutions, you might not be able to have a "good" fix for this. Alternatively, you can try this:

    1. Download NVInspector
    2. Create a .bat in notepad with the following lines and name it "idle.bat" (or something like that)

    "C:\Path\Path\nvidiaInspector.exe" -forcepstate:0,8
(Stop here if only using one card. Add the line below for two cards. For additional cards, copy the line again and change 1 to 2, and so on.)
    "C:\Path\Path\nvidiaInspector.exe" -forcepstate:1,8

    3. Create another .bat and name it something along the lines of "maxperf.bat"

    "C:\Path\Path\nvidiaInspector.exe" -forcepstate:0,16
    (Additional cards if necessary)
    "C:\Path\Path\nvidiaInspector.exe" -forcepstate:1,16

    4. Run the appropriate .bat when you need to.

This will force your clocks into those low and full power states (full power it can still downclock to 2D rates, but low power will force it to stay at 2D). If you find this "breaks" your display, try to run the other .bat to restore the higher clocks (typing into search or selecting from folder/desktop with keys) or just restart your PC. This will make things go back to normal.

It's a duct tape kind of fix, but it worked for me when I needed it to. You can run the .bat's whenever (even in-game, as in you forgot to restore max performance before loading up) and it will work fine. There's also ways to use task scheduler to start the .bat when your PC boots, when you start games, etc. so you don't have to.

    2 Dell 2007WFP 1680x1050 60hz
    1 BenQ XL2420TE 1920x1080 144hz/120hz Lightboost

The problem started when I added the 144hz monitor. Even if I run @ 60hz, the card stays in 3D clocks and eats an extra 75 watts for...nothing. This warms my whole case and prevents me from turning my fans off.

The 1st 334 driver busted the Multi Display Saver feature in Nvidia Inspector that used to work flawless for me on 332. Now if I try to enable it, my displays all go corrupt. Also, that batch file does nothing for me.

I don't understand why some of you w/ 144hz displays are getting ~300 Mhz clocks. :(

As far as 2D/3D clock speeds are concerned, click the "i" on PrecX or AB.  It's up by the properties icon. (gear)  A box will open up with your GPU & PrecX info.  Near the bottom of this box you'll see anything that requires 3D clock speeds.  If you see something there, try closing it & see if you downclock.  If you don't see anything running as a 3D process, then that's not your issue.

While we did get a repro, we are not sure which changelist introduced this new behavior.  We are trying to go through the changes and narrow down where this was introduced.

    Should I create a new thread for the 144hz = 3D clocks?

While we did get a repro, we are not sure which changelist introduced this new behavior.  We are trying to go through the changes and narrow down where this was introduced.

It would be awesome to get this behavior corrected! Thanks for looking into it.

    Any update on this?
I am unable to play Titanfall because I cannot move past the 332 driver set as it is the last branch that worked w/ NI's MDPS.
