I don't know if I'd buy one if I was looking for an air cooling solution, but thought I'd throw it out there

Good question...There are some people who aren't interested in OC'ing that might be interested though...

Never hurts to show it to people who are looking around, I always say!

Prolimatech does not recommend using that on a GTX 480.  They say the GTX 480 gives off too much heat.  Results on GTX 400 cards are not very good with the MK 13.  People have gotten ridiculous temperatures with it, and needed to tilt their cases forward to get decent results.

    Avoid.

Its also $13 cheaper at SVC: http://www.svc.com/mk-13.html

But ya it looks like a gravi-failure in terms of design, pipes are just too long and too much heat for the wicking action to kick in effectively and overcome gravity.  These would be great in a BTX case though.

I've got 2 of them on my 470gtx SLI setup, no idea why people aren't getting on with them, user error? Note the bottom card in the first pic is bowing, that was my fault, i've attached it properly now. I tried different fan setups and speeds, 2x120 900rpm, 2x120 1200rpm, 2x140 1700rpm, 1x140 1700rpm. Settled on 1x140 1700rpm (turned down via a fan mate until it was quiet), which gave the best balance between performance/noise.

IMO W/C should be the only thing you should do to the 400 series if your spending money to upgrade the cooling. Air cooling can't even come close.

Interesting results Arcane, you don't happen to remember or have comparison SS of your stock cooler temps do you?  Also it seems the bottom card isn't really being covered by the fans, are both GPU temps similar or is one significantly better than the other.  67 under load in Kombustor @ 750MHz is definitely an improvement compared to the stock cooler, you'd probably have to blast 100% on the stock fan cooler to come close to those temps.

Also, is it possible to mount that fan arm bar between the cards in SLI?  Or would the cooler on the top card itself prevent that?  Thanks.

In my rig, I had a mk-13 on a single card config at 98% GPU, two 120mm fans at 1000 RPM which is vastly quieter than a single 140mm at 1700 RPM.  I topped out at 85C, and that was with a 480, not a 470.
try turning your case upside down and retest.  Bet you run 20C cooler with contact plate gravity fed and no other changes.

I am curious, though, what your temps would be like on max voltage (1.087mv)?

0.987 mV is not that a great of an increase from the average VID's of 0.950-0.975.

Now, if you can OC to 800/1600/1900 clocks on 1.087mV like i am doing on stock cooling and keep it below 80, to something like around 75-77 on 95-99% GPU load in OC Scanner and Kombustor, then I would say the MK-13's are worth it.

For me, during stress testing my 470's on OC Scanner, temps do not go higher than 97 celsius on max voltage at 800/1600/1900 on 100% fan, and do not go higher than 90 celsius on either card while using only an 80% fan at those same clocks in Kombustor. During gaming, I usually do not breach 77-78 celsius, and a few times it might go all the way to 82, but no higher, and this is, again, 800/1600/1900 @ 80% fan for 24/7 usage.

As you can see, even with max voltage, temps are excellent unless you're running OC Scanner, which you'll never use outside of determining the stability of your OC. If the MK-13's only offer 1-3 degree temp drops, it's probably worth it to either just tone down an OC/voltage slightly, or increase the fan speed, than pay a premium for essentially comparable air cooling to the stock cooler.

This isn't a knock on you, just a mere observation is all

    Interesting thoughts guys,

For me the initial reason for buying the MK-13's was purely noise, (i've got 3 intake fans on my case and a good distance between the two cards so I don't think they're starved of airflow).

I was quite frankly shocked by it, having two of them will, of course, increase the temps and therefore fan speed but I wasn't prepared for the level it generated, I suppose coming from 5850 crossfire spoilt me (purely in noise I might add, personally I found crossfire very poor).

The temps were hitting 93c using combuster, I wasn't bothered by this particularly as it's within tolerance but any reduction is nice.

    Stock Cooling:
750 on stock volts, stable 93c max.
775 needed 1087 and that was just scary, over 100c in less than 4 minutes
Fan noise was atrocious, any attempt to reduce fan speed in Afterburner crashed it.

    MK13's
    With the 2 140's at 1700rpm

750 on stock volts, 67c max
    800, 90c top card, 80 bottom card.
Still too noisy for me but better than the stock cooling.

    MK13's
    With 1 140 at 1200rpm (ish)

750 on stock volts, 80c max
800 too much for it imo, top card hit 93c.
    Nice level of noise.

I've no doubt that using one card would improve things drastically, SLI is a challenge to keep cool on air quietly. During gaming the temps never reach anything near the level Combuster generates, Metro 2033 tops out at 72c.

Chizow, the bar connects to a pci plate so could potentially fit anywhere there's a slot free. Fans in pics are the 120's, the bottom card's still cooler.

jcde7ago, no worries, didn't take offense at all,  nice to see other comparisons.

Arcane, how did you attach the two fans onto your video cards as shown in this picture?  Also, I see you're running a 1x140mm fan now so its it positioned in the middle of your GTX 470 setup?

No, it's very different. I think it's a two piece kit; one is a PCI slot bracket, the other is a long metal piece with screw holes on it. You screw the second piece to the first and then the fans to the second piece. See where the fans are screwed in? That dark colored horizontal piece is the second piece I'm talking about...

For those who (can) use water cooling, that's hands-down the best alternative for 400 series cards. Any air cooler other than the stock turns out to be three slots which is unacceptable from my pov. One exception is I guess the Thermalright Spitfire, which is arguably the best air cooling solution to date; it's still very bulky and you need a large case.

For me, during stress testing my 470's on OC Scanner, temps do not go higher than 97 celsius on max voltage at 800/1600/1900 on 100% fan................,

If one buys a 470, the first thing you do is the  "twice the cooling, half the noise" on the stock cooler mod which can't be done on the 480.  So no real reason to go aftermarket in the first place.

^ Very true. If I were to buy one of these aftermarket coolers for my GTX 470, I'd first re-apply a good TIM, take the plastic shroud out and attach a 92mm fan on the heatsink. The stock heatsink is pretty capable actually...

Absolutely, Gryphon!  Had the 470 cooler been used on the 480, we wouldn't be seeing all these threads about the horrid cooling/noise of the 480.   How in the world did the 'genius' at Nvidia get away with what's argueably the biggest design blunder of the computing era? Considering how many design reviews the 480 went through before sign-off, you'd think that at least ONE person would have asked "uh..what's that air-blocking shield for?"

+1... very annoying.  I'd put a 120mm fan on the fins of the GTX 480 if I could, saving money on a new heat sink and not sacrificing VRAM temps.
