Hello folks.

I'm currently running a 1000W EVGA SuperNova P6 with tons of extra watts according to PCPartPicker.

Current build: 690W with a i7-1200K, EVGA 3080 FTW3, and 5 SSDs.

Upgrade build: 858W with a i7-1300K, Asus 4090 Strix and same 5 SSDs.

Roughly 140 watts of headroom with the current 1000W P6.

I don't have too much experience pushing these limits. Will I be okay? I do plan to undervolt the CPU and GPU slightly for cooling and energy reasons.

Thank you community!

I think under some conditions you can easily need more than the 160 watt headroom. That said, you would know if it happens. I run a 1600 watt T2 on my strix 4090 machine (an overkill, no doubt).

You want to consider a few things efficiency, how long are you going to use a high quality psu for? I use some PSU’s if I don’t cheap out for 7-10+ years unless a piece of hardware comes out the old psu design cannot handle and it will go pop in a catastrophic failure. I treat even a platinum to a titanium as an 80% efficiency psu and make sure I stay under that 80% at full load by going with a way higher wattage than I need.

You will be fine but at around the 5+ year mark if it’s not a Seasonic, Corsair, a Rog or any of the PSU’s made by a quality designer & manufacturer company. I would question it if it does not meet that criteria. I’m not a fan of any of EVGA’s newer PSU’s made by some janky psu manufacturers. Had one of them already go out… Maingear tried going with one of the cheaper manufacturers EVGA did in more recent years. They had to sell them on etailers cheap to get rid of stock since they would not put them in their systems due to failures. Just something to think about…

I think it’s also important to keep in mind quality of PSU is important to determine headroom. Not all PSU are made the same EVGA is a good brand and typically the cheaper brands that are not good don’t offer high wattage but that is changing.

Mostly wanted to add this since it’s easy to say 1000w is fine and it should be but always go trusted brands for a PSU.
