Hello,
I'm new to this board. I recently bought a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 graphics card for my computer. My computer is an HP desktop running Windows 7 with a dual-core processor. I bought it a year ago. I don't know much about computers.

I ordered the graphics card off of eBay. When I got it, it looked fine but didn't come with any manuals, wires or CD's. Just the card inside a padded box. I opened up my computer and stuck it into the appropriate place in the motherboard. Maybe I'm missing something, but my games don't seem to run any faster. Also, I don't think my computer detects the card because I didn't notice any new popup messages the first time I started the computer up with the card installed in it.

Am I missing something here?
Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum, Proyas.

Did you disable the onboard graphics in your BIOS and did you move the video cable from the onboard connector to the GFX card?

Did you connect the 2 required 6 pin pcie connectors from the powersupply. You need a minimum 450 watt powersupply to power the card and typical system components( hard drives, optical drives etc...)
Also; It would help if you listed your system specs. so others might assist you better.

Does your PC have 6 pin power cables from the PSU?  That card requires power.  If the card doesn't receive power then the card will just sit there.  Kinda like a car without fuel.

Do these new cards not "yell" at you anymore, like they used to if you power up without the PCI-ex cables plugged in???

Here are steps I would take.

Download newest drivers (275.33 unless you want different).
Uninstall all Nvidia graphics or ATI graphics drivers
reboot in safe mode and run driver sweeper.
reboot. Reboot again and enable pci ex or sometimes peg in bios. save and exit setup. Go back into bios and power down.
Disconnect monitor cable

To remove old video card:
Remove any power wires that could be attachted to old  card. Unscrew the screws holding video card to back plate. Push tab near board at the back of the pciEX16 slot and gently pull out.
Install new video card, screw to back plate and plug in necesary wires for power. Bigger video cards generally have 2 plugs for power located on top edge. Make sure you use the correct plugs. Generally 2 6pin pci connectors or a 6 and an 8 pin connector. If your power supply does not have this you need to upgrade you power supply.

Reboot into windows, install drivers you previously downloaded. Wait for the prompt to reboot and you are on your way!!

Thanks for the help so far guys. I'm at work right now so I don't have the computer with me, but let me say that all I've done so far is just plug the graphics card into the motherboard. I did not connect/disconnect any other wires.
The computer is just a stock computer, so I don't think it had a graphics card to begin with.

The PCIe 6-pin power connectors are usually marked with PCI-e and look like this...

If your power supply is not equipped with two of these plugs you can use the Molex to PCIe adapters that came with the card and they look like this:

They plug into the card on the end as seen here:

If this is your system: http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6720368&CatId=5138

Then, you definately need to buy a new power supply.

+1, 250W power supply is not enough for any gaming graphics card. Just saw this deal on Newegg and it would be an excellent choice for a GTX 460.

Yeah, that's what I've got.
CRAP.
I can't believe I have to buy something else to get this rig running.
Whatever you do, don't tell me this will all be obsolete in a year and I won't be able to play the best games then.

As is surely clear at this point, I don't know a lot about computers. Would it be hard to install that new power supply in my computer? Any chance it might not be compatible with what I've got?

Re:How do I install my EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460? 2011/06/16 15:18:45 (permalink)
It will be obsolete in one year and you already can't play the best games.  Welcome to the world of high end computing, but it is a really good card and will be for some time to come.

Anyway, your rig has onboard video.  You need to disable that.  When you turn on your computer you need to "enter setup"  most computers is [DEL] but on HP's it could also be F1 or F10.  That is called the bios.  In there you need to find the option that will disable onboard video.  BE CAREFUL IN HERE, ONE WRONG SETTING AND YOU CAN REALLY SCREW THINGS UP!!!

Once you do this, you will be on the new card exclusively.  The reason you may not see a performance increase in your gaming is that your games are either not designed for a high caliber video card or there is something else in your computer holding it back.

For example, my favorite software is Flight Simulator.  FSX is a very intense program on a computer, especially with graphics.  One would think that a great video card would help, but for this program the bottleneck usually occurs in the processor.

Re:How do I install my EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460? 2011/06/23 16:00:10 (permalink)
Installing power supply is fairly simple. If you unplug something, the same "something" must be plugged back into it. It's acutally harder to figure out which supply to buy than install. Total install time is probably less than 20 minutes.

It might be a good idea to actually have a psu unit in front of you so you can familiarize yourself with the plugs first. There really aren't any "trick" plugs. if the shoe fits.....

I cannot think of any reason why any good supply wouldn't be compatable with your system.

Get help first on purchasing a supply, think in terms of the longer run. For example. You want a 460, great. Any chance you would decide on a 580 or dual 460's. Will your motherboard support a second video card? Things to consider.

Get a quality power supply whatever you do.

Plenty of folks here to help you with installation. Don't worry.

And yes.... it's all obsolete already. A GTX460 is about 5+ cards behind already. What can you do
