I recently purchased a EVGA 9800 GTX+ from NewEgg and installed the card on my system: PSU: Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 500W ATX12V Motherboard: MSI K9N Neo-F AM2 NVIDIA nForce 550 Memory:Patriot Extreme Performance 3GB (1X3) DDR2 800 SDRAM I had to buy a PCI-E slot extender because the card was bumping up against a piece on my motherboard and would not fit in securely. So I plugged my 9800 into the slot extender reconnected all my cables and powered on my system. The screen is just black, doesn't even show the BIOS screen from my motherboard. The card's fan is spinning, and it looks like all other parts are powered and working fine (no unusual beeps or sounds). I looked through the manual for fixes, and usually the problem is because of an integrated graphics driver. I have no integrated graphics on my system. I tried to put in my old card (Radeon X850XT) to boot up my system and uninstall all my video drivers. Unfortunately, now I'm having the same problem (system will not boot at all, just a black screen). I've tried taking out different sticks of memory and starting it up (as suggested on EVGA's FAQ, but that doesn't have any effect). I tested other VGA devices with my monitor, and its not the monitor. Now I can not even start up my computer, any suggestions!?!

Try turning off the power, push the reset CMOS button for about 10 seconds and try again..If no luck, unplug your rig, remove the CMOS battery then hit the power button to dissipate residual power in the mobo, leave the battery out for about 10 mins, and try again..Of course when you do that, all your settings will return to default and you'll need to manually set whatever you had changed from default settings back to the way you had it before (memory timing, voltages, etc.) - Do that on your very first successful boot into the BIOS if you get that far.

Try it without the extender to see if it is causing the problem, since that is when the it began.

bob, Thanks for the reply, I tried both procedures, one with the new card in, and then with the old vid card in. No luck, my monitor's power button did blink green once, which was hopeful because thats what happens when it has a video signal, but then it quickly when back to orange again (off mode color). Any other suggestions? Thanks again.

@ vista head, tried the old card back in my system without the extender after I had removed my CMOS battery to reset my mobo. Still no luck

Put your monitor thru a self-test..Turn off everything, disconnect your monitor from the vid card, then turn it on..It should say "No Signal" or "Check Signal Cable" or somrthing to that effect..Does it ?..You may need to wait up to 60 seconds......Try resetting your monitor, depending on the make/model there are slightly different reset proceedures..See what your monitor documentation says about it..It's unlikely, but at this point anything's worth a try.

yea I've been connecting other VGA devices to it and its working fine, I even went thru and started disconnecting different parts, HDD's, DVD-RW drive, memory sticks etc. Same results, I'm guessing my mobo is completely ****ed...

That sucks dew :( So let me make sure I am getting this right- the old setup was working fine, you buy the new card, plug it in and no vid? And now no vid card in any config works on that board? It does sound like something went out on your board. I just looked at pics of your board, no on-board video. That stinks. I just put a known bad vid card into one of my systems and it did everything you described. All the fans run, you can hear the HDD going, and it all sounds like the computer is running, just no video. But you said you tried putting your old card back in and still no joy. Do you have any other computers, or access to another computer you can test parts in? It does sound like the pci-express slot died. Maybe the extender caused it. thats the only real variable here. Good luck m8

yeah i'm going to test the card in my roommate's PC later today, but it looks like my mobo fried. I might of damaged it when i was trying to put in the card, the case over the fan will pretty much fit flush up against the PCI-E slot because the card is so ****ing huge. There is like a transistor on the mobo that is a couple millimeters higher than the slot, so thats why i had to get an extender. Drove like ****ing 50 min to find one, I'm pretty pissed.

Pull off your cpu heatsink and verify that the cpu is seated properly. When you install video cards, you can sometimes unseat the cpu due to board flex. Worth a try. Other than that, you've probably damaged the board. Good luck.
