Hi,

I currently have an Acer HN274H monitor that is hooked to a GTX-980 Ti graphics board via a dual-link DVI cable.

The native resolution of this monitor is 1920x1080 @ 120 Hz., using the aforementioned cable.

I am building a new system that utilizes a much newer EVGA graphics board that only outputs via Display Port and HDMI.

As an experiment, I hooked my current card up to my monitor via HDMI and it will only output at 60 Hz., instead of the 120 Hz. I can get via the dual-link DVI cable.

If I buy a new HDMI cable that is 4k capable (120 Hz.) would this allow my current, and future, graphics board to output at 120 Hz. to my current monitor? If not, is there some other type of HDMI cable I can buy that will accomplish 120 Hz. on this monitor the same way the dual-link DVI cable can currently do?

At this time I can't afford to build the new system and buy a new monitor. I just want to get by with 120 Hz. over HDMI, if possible.

Thank you in advance for any helpful replies.

Bill

The cable is not the limiting factor.  The monitor's HDMI input needs to support the necessary bandwidth as well.  It doesn't.

Your monitor only supports 120 Hz on its DVI-D input.

You may be able to find an adapter to make it work, but that is a minefield which I care not to traverse.

Thank you for the quick response. That's not the answer I was hoping to see. :)

ty_ger07 is correct, it only supports 120Hz via DVI-D.

The rule of thumb for HDMI and Displayport is the sending port (GPU), the cable itself, and the receiving port (monitor) need to support the same specification. Monitors tend to be the slowest to adopt new standards, for example HDMI 2.1 has been out for three years now but it's almost impossible to find on high refresh rate 1440p and 4K monitors.

Thank you for the confirmation. I guess I was hoping for something miraculous.

    I have the same monitors
    finally replaced them  this year.
was cheaper and easier to find 3x 1440p 144hz monitors, than it was to get a hdmi 2.1 gpu , not to mention  finding a display that supports 2.1 hdmi.
    another reason I keep my old video cards around , had a 680 gtx ( 2x dvi-D ) and a 1070 ( which had 1 dvi-d ), so worked perfect for my old monitors.
