I agree also, we need some solid evidence man, although it seems like a good idea, we need some proof first before we go waste money on pci brackets and some good quality fans, hope this does work, because anything that lowers temps is good in my book
What he does is a great idea. In my setup I did something similar, but with the way my case is designed, it a bit different. For me there was about 6'C drop when playing BFBC2. But I understand and agree completely with what you said. I'll see if I can get a picture of my setup for you when I get home.

Great mod, i wonder if i can achieve something similar to this using a single 470 and some 80mm fans. (good thing i got my backplate a few weeks ago!)

Where did you find the HF bracket and is it a big improvement switching to the HF bracket? From the looks of it, they just made the grill bigger

You can get the HF bracket in the accessories section of EVGA Products (along with the backplate if you want it). The grill is bigger which allows more hot air thru. It will improve temps a little but not much. I think EVGA says up to 7C cooler with the HF bracket and backplate. You could just cut out some of the grills on your gpu's bracket, BUT it will VOID your warranty as that would be considered physical damage. Thanks for the guide Hething. I've been wondering how you did that with your fans.

Alright Hething, you got me. I'll be testing this set up with some of the extra fans I have. A 120mm and a 140mm, if this lowers my temps at all, lets say another -10c, I'll invest more time and money into better fans and perfect it.
This looks to be the best option to cool my GPUs w/o spending another $250 to liquid cool everything.

Outstanding! If you would, please include your ambient room temperatures as well. Very nice clocks on those cards! Thanks.. I dont know the ambient temperatures.. but I'll guess around 20C..? I've done some testing today.. I haven't finished all testing.. load-temps are as follows. I had to set manual fan on all 3 cards to 61% due to shut down problems at 40 % with this high OC.. (temps passed 105C!) 100 % load (99% in afterburner (only 2 digits)) without nice and neat cooling.. (folding on all three cards)  Then I turned on the nice and neat cooling. Still running at 100 % load.. (folding on all three cards)  During load the extra fans lowered temps as follows core , temps , Delta temps GPU1 : 93C --> 75C 18C GPU2 : 83C --> 74C 9C GPU3 : 66C --> 64C 2C This is LOAD temps (Folding on all three GPUs)..

I'm also curious about how loud these will be......are they low RPM or high....and can you hear them????

What kind of fans are you using? Are those low RPM fans? This is the fans I'm using.. http://www.aquatuning.de/product_info.php/info/p3095_Scythe-Slip-Stream-1900-rpm---120x120x25mm--.html They are bought at a German website.. No, they are not very loud.. atm they are running at 1283 RPM (rear fan) and 1040 RPM (side fan). While gaming RPM is rising along with temps.. When Im gaming I use headphones (logitech G35) so I never notice them... I can tell you it is much less noisy than using GPU-fans only! try it and judge yourself..:D

yes, I'm now thinking of buying the swiftech GTX470-HS and gpu block for each of my cards (3x 470 SC - $300 total) as well as the backplates from evga. though I only need one backplate I think I'll buy three of them for the fact that I want them all to look the same.
what I'll use:
3x Swiftech GTX470-HS
3x EVGA GTX460/470 backplate
1x COOLER MASTER R4-L2R-20CR-GP 120mm Red LED Case Fan
2x generic slot covers
same basic principle as the front one that was posted here but I will add water cooling and increase the amount of air running over my entire board by eliminating the stock shroud that comes with the card due to the fact that I have two more of those fans inside my case that I positioned directly over my cards by cutting out the mesh screen on my HAF 932 and installing a 12x12 piece of acrylic where it was. I then cut out two holes over my cards and drilled in the mounting holes for my fans' screws.
just for an idea how much this helped, I removed the shrouds from my cards, keeping the original heatsink and fans intact and I now see ambient temperatures of about 45c playing BFBC2 on max settings with the cards' fans at 75% (noise reduction).
I expect that, on water, my cards will hold a steady 30-35C under load thanks to hething's idea

Nice idea. I did the same thing on my old case. But I was able to mount the back fan to the bottom of my case and the side fan onto the side cover which had vent holes. You gotta be careful you do not short anthing out with them laying there like that. If a fan bearing goes the vibration may walk it off and short things. May I suggest some double sided tape.

Keep in mind it is VERY warm here in IL today, nice Fall Indian Summer going on. About 31 C Ambient temp in here at the moment.
I'm using 2 GTX 470 in SLI and a GTS 450 for Physx.

i do one better then this. i use double sided 3m vhb tape. sticks to the cards, like the fan is part of the cards. no pci brackets needed.

I'm currently doing something very similar, my set up looks like this:  The fans I chose for this mod are rated at 110 CFM / 1900 RPM. My fan controller should arrive tomorrow, that way I can reduce the noise when not gaming. Neither of my video cards have gone up higher then 70c at any point in time (folding/gaming/benchmarking) since I've own them, a drastic improvement over my last GTX 470 which was playing around with 90-105c temps. Ran Unigine 2.1 with max settings and Extreme Tessellation at a 1920x1200 RES on a 825/1650/1900 OC and using 100% GPU Fan speeds + mod and temps didn't go higher then 55c. A little loud but Thats just plain ol' awesome to me.

I put a 5" section of coat hanger wire through both screw holes on a corner of a 120mm fan and bent the wire up and over to hang the fan on the tray in my 24" x 24" x 9" PC-A71F case w/ SATA3 M4A89TD PRO USB3 & 1090T under an H70 mounted on the back panel. I put a small strip of velcrotape(soft side) on the side of the fan that touches the tray to dampen vibration against the tray. I notice because all my fans are 60cfm <20db. It's very quiet if you ignore the XFX 4890 and cruchy mechanical HDD. Fan speed set to Auto, my XFX 4890 runs under load around 75c and it's clocked up to 990mhz and 1075 mhz. I don't need the extra air on my card. It used to get up into the 80's but i moved the PSU from the bottom PSU mounting location to the upper PSU mounting location since the case is designed to hold 2 PSU. I implemented my fan hanger to pass air over my the VREG & 890FX heatsink. It only gets very warm while running Prime95. 1090T temp is 45c during Prime95.  PC-A71F below but i took my HDD rack out. I have 1 WD 1TB SATA3 7200RPM 64MB cache You can prob even put some golf tee legs on one and just set it under the video card(s), if ya have a big enough case.
