Hello everyone, I just made an account and am going to finally be building a computer soon and am not sure on which 980 to get. My case is going be Silverstone's GD09, an ATX sized HTPC. I'm going to have three 120 mm case fans all on intake for sure. And maybe one to two 80 mm case fans as exhaust, but only if necessary. I'm just not sure if should go with a blower style 980 or one with an aftermarket cooler. Right now I can get an EVGA one here with an aftermarket cooler for roughly the same price as an MSI one with a blower style cooler. My concern is that the gpu is located kind of near the PSU, so if I go with the aftermarket cooled 980 it would not only be dumping it's heat into the case but also directly onto the PSU. And if I go with the blower style 980, I could bypass that all together at the cost of more noise because I've heard that they are louder than aftermarket coolers. If necessary, here's what the specifications will be: - i7 4790 (non k) - Cryorig CPU Cooler - Asus H97 Motherboard - 16 gb Corsair Vengeance LP - 850 Evo Samsung SSD - Western Digital Caviar Blue - EVGA ACX 2.0 GTX 980 or MSI OCV1 GTX 980 - Silverstone GD09 - EVGA G2 80+ Gold 550 Watt PSU

Good morning Perfect_Anubis and welcome to the EVGA forums. Since this is an HTPC, I assume that you're not going to be doing much graphic intense work on it. If that is the case then heat should not be much of a concern. I can confirm though that the reference style cooler can run very quiet under decent loads.

With the 120mm fans on the side bringing fresh air to the GPU, any cooler will be fine ACX will be quieter and cooler, but doesn't exhaust the hot air by itself.

Personally I would always go for aftermarket cooling; it's better, quieter and nowadays often complimented by zero fan operation in idle mode. Also, it often looks better too but that's personal preference in the end. However, like the poster above me said, blower style exhausts out of the case whereas aftermarket solutions exhaust into the case and rely on case fans for the exhaust.

I think GTX980 on first place is not so hot as GTX980Ti. Temp difference is probably 10C at least with turbine. If someone have reference card, no matter on model GTX980, GTX980Ti, TITAN X logic way for aftermarket cooler is EVGA Hybrid. But if space is not problem. Dual Cooler could increase ambient temps a lot. If case have only two place for 120mm fans better to be used as AIO for CPU and Hybrid for GPU than for case fans. Anyway with AIO systems all hot air will go out of case immediately. Popularity of AIO for graphic card will grow same as AIO for CPU.

if you have a standard push/pull system in your case (1 fan pulling air in on the front of your case, and 1 fan pushing air out on the back of your case) the ACX cards will work perfectly. "Most" people have fans in their case anyway.

Come to think of it, don't get a 980; it's at such an awkward price point and place it's not worth the money at all. It only made sense until the Ti was released. Rather look for a 970 or a 980 Ti.

nevermind, good advice on the 970. I was going to say, they could consider a 970 FTW, save some money, and wait for Pascal to come out. But regardless, bottom line the 980ti is still $150-200 more. And the 980 is well capable of delivering for anyone needing a great card. With Pascal coming (not that it's coming soon, but it is coming), I honestly think someone should consider a 970 or a 980. Pascal is going to kill the 980ti. This is saying, and assuming, that Nvidia will deliver what they are saying they are going to do, of course. Technology will always be ahead of us, unfortunately.

I'd grab a 970, OC it and done :) the 980 is way too overpriced for what it delivers and IMHO should be erased from the line up - my two cents anyway.
As for Pascal, I'm skeptical it'll wipe the floor with the Ti. Time will tell :) I believe that Volta is where it will be at.
But we should let the op decide, and consider his usage and wallet.

It would be nice to know the OP's full intent rather than assume.
Is this for gaming and theater use, or just theater?
Every time I see HTPC, I assume they want to play movies, which the CPU (mainstream, not enthusiast) and a sound card could do perfect without a video card. If a video card is required for small scale games, the 750ti would be the best price point.
If it is for living room gaming and occasionally watching a movie, 980 or 980ti would be best.
Again, assuming doesn't help much. What is the full use of the PC going to be? That will help answer the question appropriately.

Thanks for the responses guys. Now to answer some questions I saw: - Evga B stock has the 980 at $379 right now and the MSI 980 on ebay is $399. I'm ok with these prices. - While this is an HTPC case and it will be in the living room from time to time for playing games on the couch and watching movies, occasionally it will also be at my desk when I want to be closer to the screen and use mouse / keyboard. - Budget is no more than $1400 (not including peripherals and the like). - I am going to be dabbling in streaming, video editing, rendering, and such. And of course playing games. But anywho all that aside, thanks again everyone. After reading the responses, I've decided on the aftermarket cooled 980.
