Is it really that necessary to have a gaming keyboard? I currently have a microsoft 7000 keyboard and am not really seeing the benefits of the gaming keyboard. I use a Belkin n52te and a Logitech G700. I dont really use the keyboard a whole lot when gaming. Just looking for the real reasons why I would even need one? Or is it just something that gamers get to say they have it? I just bought the G700 and noticed a big difference from my microsoft mouse, so just looking for the same reasons for a gaming keyboard. THanks.

They're are pretty much 100% useless unless you play mmorpgs where there are tons of binds you have to use.

Both responses were what I was thinking. That is why I was looking for input because I was thinking what you both have just said. LOL

Gaming keyboards can be worthwhile if you choose a mechanical one. So many people are suckered into spending a lot of money on "gaming keyboards", which use the same rubber dome switches as calculators. If you want a much smoother and positive feeling keyboard, and you can benefit from programmable keys and things like that, then you might want to look into some mechanical gaming keyboards. I picked up a mechanical gaming keyboard just to move away from typical rubber domes. I use a CM Storm QuickFire Rapid with Cherry MX Red key switches, a type of switch favored by gamers. The low activation force and actuation point being only about half way down makes it easy to double tap faster, and key pressing is just far more smooth. There is very little resistance. This one also has a Windows lock key, in case you're clumsy and accidentally hit the Windows key while gaming. The fact that it is tenkeyless also allows me to use a bigger mousepad. This keyboard doesn't have any programmable keys or LCD screens since those are all useless to me. Functionality and quality is much better than aesthetics. If you have the cash, I do recommend trying out a mechanical keyboard since the feel is just so much better. They will likely increase your WPM, reduce fatigue, and still offer some gaming benefits such as faster double tapping and NKRO if you hold down lots of keys. Disregard Logitech keyboards and other non-mechanical "gaming keyboards". They have mechanical gaming keyboards for roughly the same price or less than some standard, low end "gaming keyboards", even with programmable keys with on-the-fly macro recording, as well as backlighting. So there is hardly any need to choose any of the low quality keyboards such as Logitechs.

Same here, plus I like having the room dark so the back lit keys are a huge plus for me. Also the "gaming mode" switch is great, I always seemed to hit the windows key at the worst possible time while gaming.

In my comparison the QuickFire feels almost exactly like a DAS Keyboard. If you do not need the functions of the QuickFire and want your number pad I would recommend you look into one of them. I have only ever used Blue Switches so I can not say what switches are better suited for games. I, myself, have no issues though with Blue. If you are looking for a back lit Keyboard I would look into Deck Keyboards as they also make excellent keyboards. Having used the BlackWidow (Which I do not like) I find back lit keyboards not very useful as my monitor gives ample light to see.

Either one is a great choice though, anything but a Logitech or similar "gaming keyboard".

I agree with boredgunner, it really depends on the keyboard. I've used a Logitech G510 and was not impressed by the feel of the keys, but i've played around with a Razer Black Widow which is a mechanical keyboard and liked it more for typing or gaming. Problem is that there are sooo many choices it's downright overwhelming.

These forums can really help narrow it down. Plus if you want things like programmable keys and/or backlighting, that severely narrows down and limits your options.

The whole "mechanical" feature to me feels as much of a gimmick as any other "keyboard" feature (yes, I have used mechanical, nothing special to me). It really comes down to preference. Some people really like that tactile response. Don't really do anything for me.

Some people really like that tactile response. Don't really do anything for me. Certain mechanical switches don't even have the tactile feel. They are more reliable and benefit many people, but I do agree that they do charge quite a bit for mechanical keyboards especially the backlit ones. But if you're looking at a Logitech or similar "gaming keyboard" that costs a lot, like the G510 without sale or the G19, you can get a mechanical one for the same price with the same features (although no LCD screen on any of them). Mechanical boards are just built with far more heft as well - funny how my little tenkeyless QuickFire Rapid weighs a ton more than a Logitech G11. But it really boils down to two options in my opinion - a cheap basic keyboard, or if you want to actually spend some cash, make sure you spend it on a quality product like a mechanical keyboard rather than a Logitech or similar. Logitech really takes a basic keyboard and slaps on those features and software, and raises the price by $50 or more. A mechanical keyboard at least has a lot of craftsmanship put into the board quality and all of the switches, and you can usually pick one up for around the same price as Logitech (often less) with the same features plus the high end construction.

I love my Blackwidow to death and will never go back to a dome keyboard for my main machines. Like others have said their are a plethora of different mechanical switches the most used is the cherry MX for gaming as the gaming community has liked the aspects of those switches the most. www.wasdkeyboards.com let you use any switches and custom printed keys too boot if you are looking for something special. As for the quality product of mechanical key boards, I believe the original poster was saying this because if your switch does fail, you can actually replace it individually, where if say your regular keyboard stopped working you would have to take the whole board apart and check the membrane and reattach it correctly.

Logitech doesn't just use cheap rubber domes, but the board itself is just flimsy compared to a quality product. burning_kittins Anybody have any experience with the Corsair Vengeance? http://www.amazon.com/Cor...0003-NA/dp/B005QUQP94/ I haven't had experience with it, but I don't like the fact that it isn't fully mechanical. As far as I know the F keys, Esc key, and some others are normal rubber dome keys. The price is also up there on Corsair keyboards and I have a hard time having faith in them hanging in with their competition like Leopold/Filco. I do like how the keys rest on the keyboard surface and not in grooves... that would make cleaning so much easier.
