I just bought a Thermalsphere. Not sure what you mean by baseplate can you point out in the picture of what u cut?

if you check the 2nd pic there are 2 black things that fall on the plate of the PCB, you cut the chrome mount so those 2 can get in there

Whoa, havent looked at this in a while but am thinking this will be perfect for when I upgrade to a 1080.  The lower TDP makes this ideal when the ACX versions come out, keep the baseplate installed as well and a fan to blow on the VRM and golden.
 
The part that was cut is the mounting bracket on the Thermosphere, on the side that attaches to the GPU there is a bracket that can be taken off with 4 allen screws.  I cut the parts of that bracket out that would interfere with the 4 tabs on the black baseplate around the GPU's core.  That way the black baseplate can be installed which has thermal pads to help cool the VRM as well, then the Thermosphere is installed to the core.  Works really well but make sure you get a fan and maybe even some heatsinks on the VRM too.
