So I just received my EVGA GTX 770 to replace my GTX 570. When I made the initial switch and booted, the computer would hang in POST for about 2-3 minutes instead of the usual 2-3 seconds. After that time, a black screen with scrambled colors would flash for a second, and then after that Windows would load and everything would work perfectly at Desktop under load.

I have a  mobo, and figured that since it was an older Mobo it needed a BIOS update. So I updated the BIOS and drivers. Not only does it still hang at the first black screen (with a white _ at the top left and "B2" at the bottom right) for 2-3 minutes, but after that time it just goes to another black screen with only a blinking "_" that goes on forever. So now with my 770 I can't access BIOS or Windows (and everything works perfectly normally whenever I put my 570 back in).

I'm going crazy, does anybody know what's wrong? I can't believe the BIOS update made the problem worse...

I didn't delete my 570 drivers initially, as they are the exact same drivers. When I was having the problem in POST I reinstalled the drivers but that didn't change anything. After I updated the Mobo BIOS I can't even get to Windows now with my 770.

Also, I can't find any 770 BIOS update anywhere, even if I could get into Windows with that card installed.

I had similar problem too when I received my card today.
Cleared my bios and restarted the PC worked for me, but still it's an odd thing!

I think he meant what specific type of motherboard do you have?  Brand, model, etc.  What type of PSU, Brand, model, wattage.

I thought I had copy and pasted that in the last post, it looks like it didn't go through:

    Motherboard: MSI P67A-GD65 (B3)
    PSU: Corsair Professional 850w 80 PLUS Silver Certified ATX12v / EPS12v

EVGA support told me it's probably the card and to RMA it. But since the card worked before I updated the BIOS (well, it worked after a 2-3 minute POST but it would still work after that), I'm pretty sure that with a new card the exact same thing will happen.

Update the motherboard BIOs and then try again. Possibly the update for the motherboard BIOs didn't clear something. If the problem still occurs remove the motherboard battery, remove power to the wall socket, let the PC sit for 30 minutes. Then install the motherboard battery. Reconnect the power cord to the wall socket and then see if the same thing occurs.

I took out the motherboard batter for 30 minutes, but that didn't fix the issue. I might try the BIOS update again, but I can't use MSI Live Update because it says my BIOS is current.

Hopefully it's just a hardware issue.

Quick update: I got the new card in the mail yesterday, exact same problem. I decided to go for the nuclear option and flashed my MSI BIOS from 1.19 (the latest Sandy BIOS) to a 4.x version (which is not recommended for my Sandybridge CPU). The card now works, but I no longer have complete clock control over my CPU (I can't adjust the multiplier) and boot time is slightly slower.

If you are really invested in overclocking or are afraid to brick your board in flashing to a non-Sandy BIOS (which seems to happen frequently based on what I was reading) I would be very careful in upgrading to the 700 series with an MSI sandy combo. This doesn't really apply to people with Ivy, though.

well great that makes me feel more comfortable.....

wish me luck when I get mine, I did find a thread where someone was using a 4GB GTX 680 (an EVGA one at that) on my board so I don't see why a GTX 770 won't work on it.

Hey skittlesusa, I need your help. I have the same exact combo and and getting the same screen with my new GTX770 with only a blinking "_" that goes on forever.

You said the flashing your BIOS seemed to do the trick. Since I don't want to go out and get a new mobo, can you please let me know how you flashed it exactly? This is the only video card I have and can't get past the first screen. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

First of all, do you have a Sandy or Ivy CPU? If you are Ivy, then this flash is a no brainer, but if you have a Sandy and do what I did you will lose your ability to overclock.

You need to Register to MSI forums to looks at these links.

    I used this BIOS
    E7681IMS.439
Edit: the forum isn't allowing links. Go to the MSI forums and use the "Forum USB Flash Tool," links to it are posted in pretty much every thread about BIOS updates. The subforum BIOS is where you want to look.

On another note- it's absurd that this series isn't compatible with the latest (and likely the last) Sandy BIOS update for that board, and that this incompatibility isn't communicated. I would not have upgraded if I knew I would have to go through all of this and lose my overclock just to get the dang thing to work with my Mobo.

Oh well, last time I buy new hardware on day 1. Lesson learned.

just remove the "http://www" part of the link and it should allow you to post links skittle

They will be in text form but at least others can copy and paste to still view them.

Hey there mate, I had a very similar problem with my GTX 780 when I got it few days ago, I am using it on Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H Motherboard and up on first installation it hang on bios screen for like 1/2 min then I got some scrambled text.

Anyway I found that (Depending on your motherboard) you must set the PCI Display or PCI boot to Legacy, you might not be able to access your BIOS using the 780 however use your on board GPU if you using a Intel CPU or use another Graphics card to make this change on the BIOS.

He would have to use another video card, the P67 chipset doesn't work with the onboard video of the CPU, that only works on Z68 and later

There are quite a few issues with the GTX 780 and hardly any driver support also, only ones you can try for games are the 320.11 that comes with the Card and the only ones on nVIDIA which is the 320.18. However none of these mention of any performance increase for games running on the GTX 780. I guess the only thing to do is wait and deal with it until some decent drivers come out. But what I just said has nothing to do with the OPs problem my point was that is a new card and problems are all around, anyways OP try what I said might work for you.

I had to update my BIOS on my Z77x-UD5H to F14, but this update adds some new menus for UEFI and Legacy so you can have them both at once kind of, so the card will boot fine, however before that I had to change the single PCI option to Legacy for the card to boot.

I really hope you resolve your issue because I know how it feels to buy some expensive hardware like this and not be able to enjoy it.

This is very interesting. I was having this exact same issue with my GTX 770 SC, but flashing the motherboard (I have the g43 version of the same MSI board) to 1.J from 1.A fixed it, no need to jump to me8. Through the whole process, I made sure the computer was set to safe-boot mode, did a driver cleaner sweep, reinstalled the latest drivers, and before I did the flash I made sure to reset my CMOS. I'm unsure why you had to do the leap to me8 bios for your board, and glad I didn't need to because I like my OC on the 2500k.

Re:GTX 770 not working with my motherboard 2013/06/16 09:51:28 (permalink)
The problem was I wasn't on 1.J when I first received the card. I believe I was on 1.H or something earlier. The card "worked," but only after a 3 minute POST and it also wouldn't let me enter BIOS (it would give a weird screen with scrambled colors). But after about 3 minutes, Windows would load and everything was normal. I read the warning to update the BIOS, so I updated to 1.J, after which it wouldn't go to Windows no matter how long you gave it.

What inspired you to flash to an earlier version? I didn't really consider that option because I started form an earlier version before I flashed to 1.J and didin't feel like playing Russian Roulette with my board.

Maybe I'll try flashing back to 1.A. Or just use this as an excuse to pick up an Ivy CPU...

I didn't flash to an earlier version then back again, my BIOS just hasn't been updated in a very long time...

I notice that sometimes the standard tools for the MSI flash doesn't quite work, I'd advise checking out the community built flashing utility if you have a spare USB key.
Note you need an MSI account registered to access the page. Also, google chrome is freaking out over the image database at MSI for some reason, but the link is legit.
