Hello again all, I'm just trying to figure out what the standard curve is for the GTX580. I like to set mine to be a lot closer to my CPU Temps though it's probably a lot cooler than necessary. Regardless, I would like to know if anyone knows the preset temperatures the 580 will change fan speed at, and if it is on a curve like what I made here. Picture includes temps so you can see what I'm talking about. My curve is not finished but you get the idea.

EDIT: I wanted to note this picture is here so you can see I do run high % usage with low temps already, I intend to run my GPU like this.

Also, is saving my curve in EVGA Precision the best way to go about rolling my own fan speed curve?

Thanks in advance,
Kimura

The default fan curve for the GTX580 seems to be lower(slower) than what the preset auto is under MSI-AB, What I did was just set it to ramp up at 70% right away when it hits 60c, this prevents the card from ever going over 80c, but if leave it at stock profiles 87-90c is pretty common.

Thank you, so can I see the default slope using MSI After Burner? Also, configuring in Precision my own slope, is this preferred?

Here is the fan profile I use on my 580 sli setup in "Afterburner" would be nice to see what others use with there setup aswell. BTW my cards rarely get over 70c unless I play FFXIV.

What I do is just to make several profiles, rather than a fan curve.

My profile 1 is for 2D and it locks the fans at a constant 40% fan duty cycle, the GPU never goes much over 40C.

#2 is for most games, and I lock the fans at 70%, the GPU temps hover at about 68-70C
If in review I see a game that goes over my preferred 70C, I use setting #3 which locks the fans at 75%.....I rarely need that cycle.

Of course these must be adjusted manually.  You can create a curve in AB pretty much any way you want as long as the fan duty cycle will hit 70% when the GPU temp approaches 65C or so.
My goal is to never let the GPU exceed 75C and so far I haven't seen that, and I run SLi and three screen Surround.

My plot points for my fan profile is as follows:
30C - 30%
55C - 55%
90C - 100%

So when I watching videos and non-gaming related stuff, the fans will stay quiet. The hottest I seen my card go is 67C.

Although I have a 570 and not 580, I pretty much do the same thing. Even when I run my OC profile and lean on the card pretty hard it never goes over 70C. If it goes above 68C I'm surprised.

My computer finds cures for diseases and searches for aliens when I'm not gaming...what does yours do?

I noticed (dunno if its the 580 instead of my 470 or if its just updates) but I finally am at full clock inside and outside cities in XIV. Yeah though, something makes that game push the GPU as hard as Furmark.. My chart is much steeper than yours, I don't want my temp above 60 unless, yeah XIV. I can hardly hear it anyways because I put my PC in another room so I could stand the sound of cooling the 470 and x5680s :\ lol

Thanks for responses everyone. I am still curious if EVGA Precision is the application I should be using for this? It seems to be working fine at least.

I added probably more points than I need in my graph comparing it to everyone else's posts but I jump my fan speed up quickly as my most common gpu applications are high usage like folding@home. If you don't jump the gun with the fan on these applications then you will heat the card up higher and then stabilize vs stabilizing the temperature with a lower fan speed. In my head this makes perfect sense but maybe I'm wrong?

Even though this means high fan speeds (such as 60% @ 50C) I don't mind as I can just turn those programs off if I need quiet. Plus I have to admit this GPU is very quiet when comparing it to the GF100 line. I have bad tinnitus so I have a fan to make noise already, and the sound from the new GPU fan is a low gentle sound which is really easy on the ear and easy to forget it's there. The 470 I used to turn up to higher % while still having higher temperatures, and notice the sound all day..

Installed backplate today and for some reason it KILLED temps...?? Anyways, noticed GPU won't go above 85%.. Any reason for that, and is bios update the only fix?
