I'm not sure what it's called, but I just decided to put the gpu fan extension on my atcs 840 (the bracket at the front of the pic that get mounted on the rear of your case where the gpu exhaust goes). http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageGallery.aspx?CurImage=11-119-187-S12&ISList=11-119-187-S01,11-119-187-S02,11-119-187-S03,11-119-187-S04,11-119-187-S05,11-119-187-S06,11-119-187-S07,11-119-187-S08,11-119-187-S09,11-119-187-S10,11-119-187-S11,11-119-187-S12&S7ImageFlag=1&Item=N82E16811119187&Depa=0&WaterMark=1&Description=COOLER%20MASTER%20ATCS%20840%20RC-840-KKN1-GP%20Black%20Aluminum%20ATX%20Full%20Tower%20Computer%20Case With a scythe GT 1450 rpm fan it has dropped the temp on my top 480...and I poop you not: from 70 deg to 58 deg under the exact same conditions at idle. The EVGA GTX 400 series high flow bracket is a good way to lower temps slightly, along with their GTX 480 backplate. Set up good chassis airflow with positive air pressure. The only aftermarket heat sinks I'd get are the Thermalrights since they provide proper VRM cooling unlike the others if you get the VRM-G2. Lack of VRM cooling can actually hinder overclocks. I'm most likely going to go with a Spitfire + VRM-G2 for my GTX 480, switching my CPU cooler to a Corsair H70 so I can fit it.

I just bought the backplate and I am going to use the single slot bracket mod. I have some IC Diamond to replace the core thermal paste. Unless noise is a terrible problem I also would not recommend going with an after market cooler like the Gelid or whatver Arctic plans to come up with. I have a plan to forcefully induct air on both sides of the fan with 2 Gentle Typhoons. 1 over the stock fan and 1 over the cut out on the PCB. I think with the back plate, the excess air will also benefit cooling.

Yeah you will see the backplates will get very hot. I know someone who put a fan on his backplate, 80mm I believe, and it dropped his GPU temps like 7 degrees Celsius (GTX 470 SC+ but it should apply to GTX 480 as well). I didn't bother with the backplate since the Spitfire requires mounting hardware on the back of the PCB. Thermalright GPU coolers are the best for performance and noise. But I want to see how well the HR-03 GTX does on the GTX 480. I hate the reference GTX 480 heat sink. That grill over the heat sink can't be removed without making it obvious that you did remove it, which voids your warranty. It would be awesome if we could remove the grill and zip tie a fan or fans to the stock heat sinks. This method is commonly done and is a great way to lower noise and temperatures without costing much. I wouldn't even need a new heat sink!

☄ Helpful
I just posted this in another thread the other day, but I keep my twin, EVGA GTX 480SC's cool with a couple of 3000 RPM Scythe Ultra Kaze fans mounted so they blow right into the air intake on the end of the cards. I also use the single slot brackets to allow maximum flow out of the back of the card. When I'm going to be doing anything GPU intensive, I put the cards fans at 100%, and this, along with the extra intake fans keep the temps in the low 40's at idle in a room that's at 26-27 degrees, C. Under load or stress testing, they seldom exceed 80-81 degrees. The fans blow air into the cards, but also increase the air flow along the front side heat-sink and the back side of the card. I have removed the slot covers on either side of the cards to allow the air flowing past the cards to exit the back of the case. It may not be pretty, but it works for me. I've got a large, Cooler Master HAF 932 case with plenty of room for these long cards and extra fans. Also notice the 50 mm fans on the back of the case helping exhaust the air and the bottom fans blowing cool air up onto the cards. (Since I've taken these pictures, I've changed out the fans for an all green color scheme. I'll have to post some pictures. It looks rather different than the usual blue or red.)

It sprays it all right at my feet and I can feel it rising right to my face. Ugh.

Hey comrade what voltage and clock speeds do you run your GTX 480s at? I have the same airflow setup but crappier fans and my GTX 480 gets damned hot at 1138 mV (863/1726/1050). I also have an ATCS 840 with that external air duct. Shaved off about 4 degrees Celsius before the EVGA high flow bracket. Haven't tested it otherwise. I have a Cooler Master R4 fan in it (1800 RPM/69.69 CFM) and most of these are also my case fans. They suck but whatever. My PSU is on top with two 120mm intakes on the bottom and three more behind the drive bays, with two 120mm fans on the front of the case (will be 3).

I can't speak for him but my idle temps barely changed and my load temps went down 4 degrees Celsius. This was before the high flow bracket for my GTX 480, which lowered temps 3-4 degrees Celsius.

Those temps are at the stock speeds for the 480 SC's. I find the performance with two cards in SLI is good enough that overclocking doesn't do much more than heat the room up a bit quicker. I've run them at 760/1960 and that raises the load temps to about 90-93 degrees. The idle temps stay in the mid 40's.

My computer sat at idle for about an hour, gpu 1 went down to 70 deg c at idle. Changing nothing, added the attachment and it got down to a stunning 58 deg c. Seems pretty high for idle right? The 480s do not downclock to nearly where they should when two monitors are attached. I wish I could put one monitor on each card and have each card stay at their single monitor clocks when idle but...no.. Have not tested at load but my load temps don't seem much better but like I said, I think I need a more powerful fan for that. if the exhaust fan isn't going close to as fast as the gpus are then I don't think it's helping much. I'm using a gadget that shows the gpu fanspeed and idle (44% is the min) is apparently 1740 rpm or so. So if the 1450 rpm fan can help that much then an 1850 rpm fan should be sufficient for load. If I could get a fan to scale with the gpus...hmmmm. On a side note, since the external exhaust covers the entire rear of the case it has the added benefit of keeping the ambient hot air around the gpus down and ultimately, keeps my rad cooler.

That is an impressive temperature reduction from the exhaust duct. It is too bad you don't have better ventilation in your case, idling at 58 is better than 70 though! What are the intake and exhaust fans you have currently in your case?

Nice job on the compilation thread Burntofferings. I like that CoolerMaster shroud too, may have to try and get one and run a duct from it out a window or even better, into an AC return. Should cut down on ambient room temps nicely.

I found this mod, which is similar to Wazooty's exhaust mod. http://www.coolerguys.com/llbs09.html It is made by Lian-Li. I am not sure how much luck you would have using it for another manufacturers case. It looks like it attaches to the 3 expansion slots so perhaps you just need 3 open slots to use it.

yea, I'm running dual screens and have been since '05 and I just got this card earlier today... It's running at 78c right now (idle, not sleep), room is probably around 82c... i used the precision tool thing to find a sweet spot for the fan speed (loudness+temp), I'm at 58% and 77c atm Just reading up on what I need to do to get this lower.... I hear it can handle the heat, but this cant be good for a card, idle at 70-80c and load at 85-100c

Changing the thermal paste is def. the easiest and best way to lower temps. Secondly would be to get a hi-flow or super-hi-flow bracket. Those things alone have been known to drop temps 5c each. But tells us what case you have and all that and maybe we can help. Picks would help as well.

Very nice thread/compilation Burnt! I liked reading it very much. You guys all have great ideas and I very much like seeing all the ingenious thought. Although I decided to just water cool my 470s because I can't stand the noise any longer I still want to see more ideas for computers I build for others. Again, thanks. BR thread IMO.

As you can see I just drilled to little holes in the case where my brackets lined up at. I just made the brackets first, then held the fan up in position marked the holes then drilled carefully. As you can see I also took a pair of tin snips and made the original GTX 470 brackets a single slot. Heres the picture of the little bracket. Like i said it was just an old PCI slot cover that I bent down and cut off to make work. Depending on what room temp is Ive seen idles as low as 34 degrees on the bottom cardand usually the temps never get higher than 79 degrees while gaming. Thats the top card, the bottom is usually high 60's to low 70's. The middle card is about inbetween the two others about mid 70's. It works really well actually,I also use MSI afterburner because of the kick ass auto fan profile feature that adjusts fan speed according to card temps. It would prolly work better if I had a fan that moved more cfm, like on of those scythe fans

Thanks for the pictures and your temps. I think no matter how you slice it these exhaust mods do a pretty good job and the benefit of them is even higher if you are doing SLI. You have inspired my to do something like this. I am going to engineer something for the back of my case. The only problem is, it is a tiny little box, so the card exhaust area, there isn't much roo9m, nor is there any place to sink any screws. I will find a way however. I found some excellent Marine grade self adhesive Velcro by 3m - I know I know Velcro isn't as good as a screw, but I think this would be a good solution.
