Hey,

just wanted to get some opinions on this. This is my 2nd new Card that has this problem. When my fans start spinning (default on this card at 55°C) there is a weird clicking noise. I guess its the bearing. But you can hear it all the time whenever the fans are under 30% Fan Speed.

/watch?v=zCQ01S1dQSc&feature=youtu.be

For the video I set the speed to 25% and as you can hear its sounds like you try to start a lawn mower. The noise is really annoying and without setting a fan curve with a software that needs to keep running in the background you hear this sound every couple of minutes when its back to 55°C in Idle again. The constant noise can't be normal and I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this? Like I said this is already the 2nd Card.

Sounds like the fan start and stopping.  I would recommend running a manual curve to keeping the fans running at low speed (above 30%) while adjusting them for higher temps.  If you set them too low I think is the reason you're experiencing this.  I think there's a certain low range they can handle before they will keep auto starting to keep them from stopping completely.

Yeah, known "issue", when pwm signal is not enough for steady spinning - fans starts and stops in cycle. But they click on every start. So you getting clicking noise. And your rpm reading act like this:

So you want to avoid low rpm settings and you can do it with a step on your fan curve like this:

also you can add hysteresis so fan will not turn on and off if temperature oscillating near "turning on" step.

I tried the method using EVGA Precision X1 setting a manual Fan Curve. However it seems that the programs has to run to recognize the Fan Curve. If its not running the Fans will not turn on at all anymore! Which is highly risky imo because when the program freezes or won't autostart for some reason and I don't notice it my card will overheat. Or did I miss anything here?
EDIT: The Hysteresis setting doesnt influence the start/stop of the fans either. Any time the speed is under 30% it starts clicking again. Right now im testing it with a game and with the fan curve the fans jump from 0-31% fan speed so the temp drops about 2-3°C almost instantly and back to silent again. So basically the same thing but without the clicking noise ofc.

Also I doubt that every card has this issue then it wouldn't be rated so good, would it? I don't know i just can't believe that every owner of a GTX 1660 has this issue and is forced to use a software or deal with the noise.

I would just set a fixed fan speed of 30% at idle then set a static speed of 80 to 100% when gaming. Precision doesn't need to be running for a static speed to hold.

Even my 2080ti hybrid has that issue :)
You can try to switch bios if it has this feature. In that case fans never stops so no clicking sound.

Also I can say that I never saw afterburner or x1 crashed or something.

OP, just curious how you went about resolving this issue. Facing a similar click with a Gigabyte 1660 Super and was looking at EVGA as an alternative. I agree for the amount we are paying, the least we can expect is to not need to tune fan curves to solve a seemingly basic hardware issue? Thanks in advance.

I went with the custom fan curve, found no way around it. Using MSI Afterburner at 32% lowest Speed. It sadly has to run all the time. It works well, but I still don't like the fact that I have to use it. I found the issue on all 3 cards, so I guess it is the normal behaviour of these cards.
