Hello everyone,

New to the forum and looking for some assistance on an GTX 1060 6GB 06-P4-6262-KR.

I am aware of many similar issues regarding black screens that have been posted on this forum but none seem to be the same issue that I have.

I bought the GPU second hand and has worked without an issue up until I cleaned it. I used the GPU on two different systems, a test bench and as a place holder in my personal rig.

To summarize what occurred, I took apart the GPU and cleaned it using isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs, paper towels and a toothbrush. I put the card together and installed it back on the test bench mentioned before. System booted and I installed the latest drivers from the Nvidia website. After the restart, I started experiencing artifacts and then the GPU turned off, fans stopped spinning and light turned off with a black screen. Within 30 to 45 seconds, the GPU powered back on again and the black screen remained except the resolution dropped from 1920x1080 to 640x480. The EVGA light is turned on and the fans continue to spin.

I reseated the GPU a number of times, I took it back apart to inspect, reassembled and installed with the same issue.
The system would power on and everything seems normal. Within a few seconds the EVGA light would go off for a few seconds and then come back on. The screen would receive a signal but is a black screen showing the lowered resolution.

Initial teardown yielded one oddity on one of the chips, there looked like what was dried up resin or maybe flux. Not sure what it was but I left it alone for the most part. Reused thermal pads and used Artic MX-4 to repaste.

Second teardown, I decided to remove the dried resin/flux using alcohol and paper towels as I assumed it might have caused a short of somewhat. Issue still persists.

Test bench:
GB A520M DS3H AM4 (BIOS updated to current)
Ryzen 3 Pro 4350G
16GB G.Skill Ripjaws 3200
650W Seasonic 80-plus gold

Personal rig:
B550 Tomahawk (BIOS updated to current)
Ryzen 7 5800X
16GB Crucial Ballistix 3600
850W NZXT 80-plus gold

Tried known-good HDMI cable. I do not have any monitors that use DP or DVI. Adapters are an option but I do not own any.

With GPU connected, I cannot get to the BIOS screen let alone windows desktop.
Test bench works utilizing the iGPU with no issues.

Thank you and I appreciate your time.

    Update:
I decided to try the card in my personal rig and see what would happen.

Upon initial start up, black screen and VGA LED debug light was illuminated. After a few seconds, there was a signal and a screen was displayed, however, I did not see the BIOS screen and ended up at the windows login screen. There is a lot of artifacts displayed on screen so I installed the latest drivers from the Nvidia website to see if that helped but it did not. When trying to login to safe mode to use DDU, the card would not work and the system would just shut off after a minute or so after the system would restart to go into safe made.

I decided to buy a HDMI to DP adapter to verify it wasn't the HDMI plug itself but the same issue occurred.

Anyhow if you're getting artifacts in the BIOS, it has nothing to do with drivers or the OS. The GPU is toast based on your testing.

Time to give the card a good baking in an oven you don’t use for food if out of warranty.

Bought second hand so warranty isnt an option.

Would you recommend using a counter top convection oven? The whole baking topic seems to be debated about its effectiveness and safety. I figured I'd at least try it before selling it off for parts and a loss.

A counter top convection oven should work just fine.

Is there a certain method that you would recommend as far as baking?

From a quick search, there are varying methods as far as temperature and time. Some even use a heat gun instead of an oven.

Note: Make sure you bake the card with the die facing up instead of down.

Heating up your card has little chance to repair it completely, more likely it might work again for a few hours until it will be dead for good.

You can try it anyway but expect that your card is probably already dead and you'll need to look for another one sadly.

Generally true. However, it happens enough that solder fatigue or a poor solder joint reflows enough to fix it it might be worthwhile to try. Normally I'd say not bother, but with supplies as tight as they are, why not?

Its worth a shot seeing that I bought the card used, only had it a few weeks before taking it apart to clean and it took a dump on me.

I might be 0 for 2 with a 980Ti that is looking like DOA so saving one of them would not make the loss hurt as much.

That's a risk when buying second hand though...
