Welcome to Hilbert's Birthday Challenge: 3 day PPSE from January 23 01:00 UTC to January 26 01:00 UTC

I'd like to begin by thanking Michael Gutierrez for four years!!! of hosting challenges! Let's wish him luck in university and his future endeavors beyond PrimeGrid.

PrimeGrid will celebrate David Hilbert's 162nd birthday with the inaugural challenge for the 2024 challenge series: a 3 day PPSE challenge from January 23 01:00 UTC to January 26 01:00 UTC. David Hilbert was a German mathematician and one of the most influential mathematicians of the 19th and early 20th centuries. His work made the first foray into the foundations of mathematics, from proof theory to reverse mathematics, and Hilbert's 8th Problem, the Riemann Hypothesis, remains one of the most important unsolved problems in mathematics, underpinning results from number theory to cryptography.

To participate in the challenge:

  • Wait until the challenge timeframe starts (or set your BOINC Client download schedule accordingly), as tasks issued before the challenge will not count.
  • In your PrimeGrid preferences section, select only the Proth Prime Search Extended LLR (PPSE) project.

Important reminders:

  • Note on LLR2 tasks: LLR2 has eliminated the need for a full doublecheck task on each workunit, but has replaced it with a short verification task. Expect to receive a few tasks about 1% of normal length.
  • The typical deadline for some of these WUs is longer than the challenge time-frame, so make sure your computer is able to return the WUs within 3 days. Only tasks issued AFTER the start time and returned BEFORE the finish time will be counted.
  • At the Conclusion of the Challenge: We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their tasks instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING. ABORTING tasks allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING tasks causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until tasks expire to send them out to be completed. Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thanks!

    Err umm PG?

Ran a few today, anywhere from 12 to 20 mins per task on the 2 rigs I tested. 1 task per thread is best. Each task uses about a Mb of L3 cache so do the math if using old hw.

They are asking people to keep running PPSE after the challenge for a little while to keep growing the size of the tasks.
What they're trying to do is get it back into the top 5000 record book again so PPSE will be eligible for the TDP in February.
They though maybe this challenge would do it but no, it will be a little bit short of that goal.
I will keep running some for a couple days, except my 2P going on to folding for that challenge.
