I was recently given the awesome reward of a GTS 450 for participating in a folding event. In order to use this card, I also had to upgrade my power supply to a 430W unit. Unfortunantly the card seems to be running hot, approx 80c when idle, and when the card is pushed by say running the rocket sled demo that came with the software, my PC goes back then reboots.

My system stats:
Intel Quad 2, 2.4GHZ
3 GB ram
Windows Vista Home, 32-bit
GTS 450
430w power supply

What I've done already:
Downlaoded current driver from EVGA website
Downloaded precision, set fan to 100%, but it doesn't sound my system fans at at max, they tend to make much more noise when they are.

Any suggestions would be appreicated!

Can you make sure the fan is running on the card.  Seems 80 C is hot unless you're computer is in an oven.  My old 8800 GT ran that hot when I was folding@home GPU, but I took it out and realized the fan and heat sink were completely covered in dusty fuzz.  My new 460 SuperClocked runs at 56 C at 80% GPU load (folding@home GPU) in roughly 76 F ambient temp.

    Other things to think about:

Did you check your new power supply to make sure it can push enough AMPS on the +12V rail.  Although I'd try to find out what's causing the card to run so hot.  Bad fan, bad connections, etc.

Sounds like the fan isn't running, my GTS 450 runs at 43c watching video, tops out at 55c during gaming. That's with an ambient temp of 80f... Something isn't right. What are your complete system specs? Including brand and model # of all major parts, and case. Is that processor the Core Duo Q6600? As far as I know you're the first person to have an overheating problem with a 450, as they typically run cooler than any other 400 series. To begin with, if you have more than one HDD and or more than one DVD burner/rom/etc., you need more power.

Well part of the problem might be that its a retail machine that I've been pushed into customizing. Its an HP m9000t. The processor is the Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600. I replaced the w300 power supply it came with with a 430w Antec bp430.

What would make the fan not run? And which fan? Because I hear two distinct levels of fan activity depending on whats going on in my system.  I have only 1 hard drive internally, only 1 cd drive, doubt either of those are the problem.

80 C still seems safe.  Guru3D posted a heat test with max load and the GTS 450's range from 40 C to 72 C.  Guru3D also states that this card requires people use at least a 500 W PSU.

Also, the GTS 450 has a maximum graphics card wattage of 106W.  So, 106W / 12V = 8.83 Amps (~9 Amps on the 12V rail).

    Here's a quote from the site -
    http://www.guru3d.com/article/geforce-gts-450-review-roundup/15

    Recommended Power Supply

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:
    GeForce GTS 450
    • On your average system the card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit.
    GeForce GTS 450 in SLI
    • A second card requires you to add another ~100 Watts. You'll need a 600 Watt power supply unit.
If you are going to overclock massively, then we do recommend you purchase something with some more stamina.
There are many good PSUs out there, please do have a look at our many PSU reviews as we have loads of recommended PSUs for you to check out in there. What would happen if your PSU can't cope with the load?:
    • bad 3D performance
    • crashing games
    • spontaneous reset or imminent shutdown of the PC
    • freezing during gameplay
    • PSU overload can cause it to break down

Temps seem a bit odd.. when mines idle is as low as 25c.. When gaming it never goes over 56

So are you saying you have external HDDs? I wasn't saying they're the problem, just that more drives use more juice. Are you using precision? You do have to customize the automatic fan ramp ups to keep it running cool. If you are letting it run on auto without customizing, that may be the reason for your temps. Try setting it on manual at max (70%), see what temps are then.
Case fans are controlled by bios, you can speed them up there...
As far as PSU's are concerned, yes, you need more. Others say 500 watts,  550 or 600 would be even better. If you intend on adding drives, a 650 wouldn't be out of line.

Anymore ideas? I put in an additional PCI fan. No luck. Thing still crashes when its asked to do something like run Civ 5. Kinda sad that it says 400w on the box and then its "oh, really its 600w" when you get it. Yes, I have an external hard drive with a seprate power supply for it? :/

That card will run hotter in a retail case air flow is horrible in them. Just out of curiosity what is the amperage of the 12v rail. Even if you have a 1000w psu if its only rated at 20 amps it's not gonna run much of anything. It's possible that under load it's drawing more amperage than the psu can handle causing instability. Just my 2 cents worth from the top of my head. I think 22amps is what it needs from what I could find. Now granted you could probally get away with one that is rated at 18 or something but it could be the problem.
    Straight from EVGA
    Requirements
Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 22 Amps.)

It lists 2 12v lines....one at 17A and another at 16A...might be the problem. Not sure. I just went back to my old video card. Now I have all these temperature tools and find out even my pathetic old 8500 GT runs at 60C when doing jack....maybe this PC is just foobar for higher end performance purposes.

Open up the side of the case, place 20 inch box fan blowing straight into it.  Insert ear plugs or noise canceling headphones
