Hello, I just recently got my 570. It idles at around 55-57 Celsius. Just for comparison, I have a I7 920 OC'd to 3.9 GHz and it idles at 40-45 C so I think the airflow in my case is pretty good. I have an Antec 1200, with the huge top fan, three front fans, and two back fans. The room my computer is in usually averages between 20-30 C. Also, I have my fan set at 1% fan for ever 1 degree of temp, so the fan is usually at 57%. So I went out to CompUSA today to try to get a side fan to see if I could cool down my card a bit. I got a fan with 72CFM thinking it might help. If it did anything, it dropped by cards idle temp 1 degree. I'm not too worried, because I believe the max temp is around 95ish. Under load (playing Shogun 2 max settings, or Crysis 2 max settings) I never really get up 74 C. But I'm not quite sure why the temp is so high. And why a fan didn't do anything to lower it. So, are my temps fine? And should I go out of my way to lower them if they are? Oh, I do have two monitors connected to the card, one of which is my TV. But its not always on. Don't know if that matters Thanks in advance.

Your idle temps are defiantly high. My 570's idle around 34-39c, and that is with 3 of them sandwiched together. You room temp is pretty warm if its hitting 30c.

I did my math wrong on room temp. My bad. It's usually around 20 C. It goes between 65-69 F. Since the idle temps seem to be very high, then, can anyone recommend a side fan? I guess I'm leaning towards this one since it has the speed controller and the highest airflow I could find without being too loud. http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16835200028

55-57 at idle is on the high side. It sounds like you set up a custom fan profile to increase as your temp increases, why not try forcing the fan to sit at like 80% to see if your temps drop at all. If everything is working like it supposed to, it shouldn't take more than about 15-30 seconds before you see the temp drop significantly.

At 80% fan speed (which is seriously loud) the temp hovered between 47-48 C.

Yeah those temps are high for sure. Especially if you have the fan speed getting up that high. My 3 580s idle in the mid 40's sandwiched together in an 800D with the fan on auto, usually at 40%. You might want to try taking it apart and reapplying the TIM with something of a higher quality. Like MX-4 or something similar.

Multiple monitors or using a monitor at 120hz will prevent the GPU from downclocking to low power 2d clocks which results in higher temps at 'idle'. You can check this using Precision. Core clock at full idle is 51mhz

jethc9 You might want to try taking it apart and reapplying the TIM with something of a higher quality. Like MX-4 or something similar. I assume that's the heatsink/fan thing on the card. Wouldn't that void my warranty? Any my core clock has never moved from 732 MHz.

Yup that's why your temps are so high. Disconnect the HDTV and it should downclock. For EVGA cards replacing the TIM does not void the warranty. Though I'd check your temps with just one monitor connected before you go that route.

That would be the result of your high temperatures...if you are running multiple monitors, unplug one and see what happens (should downclock the card to 51 mhz) and lower temperatures greatly. I just got my 580...and it is acting a little funny idleing, my 570 HD was on the ball with it, even when browsing the internet it would be downclocked to 51 and temps would stay 32-34, my new 580 jumps up to 450 mhz even when I open firefox. Not sure if this is because of the new beta drivers or what but it kind of irritates me.

It's the new Fire Fox. It's uses GPU acceleration. IE9 does the same thing but not quite as bad.

Alright, thank you all for the help! I disconnected by TV and the temps dropped to the low 40s. But now I have one more question. How bad for the card is it to idle in the mid 50's? Under load, it never gets up past 74ish C. I really don't feel like connecting and disconnecting my TV whenever I go to play a game or watch a movie.

That is perfectly acceptable and will not harm your card.

I thought in your first post when you said that the TV wasn't always on that you were disabling it...I should have asked. I leave my TV hooked in to my HDMI slot 24/7, but only activate it when I want to use the TV as a display. That way I don't have to keep taking the plug in and out to cause excessive wear. Glad you got it sorted out, low 40's sounds about where it should be at idle.
