Started at around the time I installed the first set of 25x.xx drivers with my GTX470 (now a GTX48), thought it may be an issue with the drivers so I decided to wait for drivers to mature. BIOS is set to S3, but when the comp goes to sleep it just pops right back up.

Ran a diagnostic and it pretty much confirms its something with PCI express, the USB stuff is normal (Hubs, iPhone, 3D Vision dongle and glasses, xbox 360 dongle, controller and mic; tried it already without any of that stuff plugged in). Anything helps, this is the top system in my sig (GTX480 and 8800GS SC dedi physx).

try the sleep function without the usb hardwares and see if it corrects itself.. or use this link provided and let it run the necessary diagnostics  to pinpoint and fix the issues.. I would also check all wires and connections..

    Tried it again.

I also went into the command prompt to see what was waking my PC and got some funky answers back.

    powercfg -LASTWAKE

    Wake History - 1
    Wake History [0]
        Wake Source Count - 0

Basically, no reason given why it woke. I went through and disabled the mouse, keyboard and LAN from waking the PC. Didn't make a lick of difference.

In your BIOS look for a S2&S3 setting... Use that...

Using the run command set hibernate to off...

    powercfg -h off

Then using a short cut or assigning the following command line to a function key on your keyboard, run the following:

    rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

Make it sleep from the shortcut or function key and see if stays asleep...

Also, there should be BIOS settings to permit the keyboard to wake the machine... SOMETHING has to have the capability to wake it up... I suggest the keyboard... a simple tap on the space bar should do it...

GIVE IT A FEW MINUTES to actually go into to sleep mode before you try waking it... make sure your mouse is NOT moving and be patient...

    Hope that helps... M

Sorry it took me so long to get back to this thread. I tried it, but it again popped right back on. In the BIOS is only gives me a S1 or S3 option, I set it to S3. On the weekend, I'm going to crack this baby and try pulling some cards, I remember getting a cheap ATi TV tuner in the summer, maybe even around the time this started (though I swear I thought this was working with the last of the 187.xx drivers). New NV drivers come out on Tuesday, so gonna get a chance to play with those too.

And here is what I did today, pulled all extra cards (physx, X-Fi, and ATi Tuner), Unplugged all USB devices (even used a PS/2 keyboard) and installed 197.xx drivers and the PC still turned right back on after I had it go to sleep. It has to be the 400 series card some how.

I am wondering if the Monitor itself has a driver that conflicts with Display driver . To dig deeper into the issue, can you provide your Compuer SPECs ( if Brand name PC) or Motherboard Specs and Monitor make and Model please. Are there are any BIOS Setup Power Options that override the Operating System Power Options?

Additional things to look: USB controllers might also cause this problem if Allow this device to wake the computer check box is selected thru' Device Manager > Universal Serial BUS Controllers> Properties> Power Management tab

    These two settings stand out.
Power Policy:Power Plan Personality is High Performance (Plugged In)
The current power plan personality is High Performance when the system is plugged in.

Power Policy:Sleep timeout is disabled (Plugged In)
The computer is not configured to automatically sleep after a period of inactivity.

Did you try changing the Power Plan Settings? I would try Balanced with "Put the computer to sleep" set to 1-20 minutes or the Power Saver Plan.

    Re:Windows 7 won't Sleep. Friday, February 25, 2011 0:13 PM (permalink)
    This has FINALLY been fixed!!!

Turns out it was the Nvidia HD Audio Device (so it was the video card) that was causing my system to wake up, the fix is the same as the log in/black screen fix, disabling it in the device manager (match PCI bus of graphics card(s) to PCI bus of High Definition Audio Device under System devices and disable it). You guys have no clue how much this has bugged me.

Next thing on the agenda is getting this system to stably OC again. This was messed up by a improper BIOS flash caused be an incomplete BIOS uploaded by ABIT. I was able to restore to a slightly older BIOS, but no OCs were ever stable again (even tried going back to the original BIOS). There were some issues with the system that the BIOS updates claimed to fix, which they are, but at the cost of my OC (Q6700 2.66Ghz @3.33Ghz). I bought this board the year ABIT went out of the hardware game and I've recently tried to contact them to RMA (last year of hardware "support") but they won't answer emails or the phone. Sigh, should of bought a eVGA board!

On Topic:  @OP, it's funny how a conflicting IRQ would affect how a system sleeps.  Glad you fixed it.

Off Topic:  Giving a BR to whom their post doesn't fix a problem doesn't seem like the way to go.  Plus, there's plenty of equally helpful posts.  The solution that fixed the issue should be BR'd if anything.  Just a friendly note.

KK, I see how the guy that gave me advise that didn't work got it. Guess he got it because I didn't have time to post a response for several day (4 days) so they thought it fixed it. Teaches you to be attached to the internet by an umbilical cord.
