Hello, kinda new to overclocking and I noticed that there is a slight whining noise during 3d mode after overclocking the card. I am wondering what that is, is it bad, does it mean the card is really stressed out and will drasticly shorten its life? any info would help.

That whining could be from your PSU or the motherboard's VRM's. Post your system specs.

Ehh, not such a big fan of Paidmax PSU's, have heard a lot don't put out the right wattage they advertise, how old is the PSU?

If I were you, I'd def. have the system run on full load, maybe EVGA OC scanner for just the GPU and open the side panel door and keenly listen near the GPU or the PSU. You should be able to distinguish which component it's coming from by just listening. It really could be the PSU is going bad because a GTX 460 would not whine unless it's been folding under a blanket for the entire year baking in heat, lol. Your probably hearing a capacitor straining under heavy load while gaming.

Okay I did this and it is definitely coming from the video card. which is at 820/1640/2100 at 1.062v and has never gone above 78c normal testing is 75 when I remembered to adjust the fan. lol

Try then doing a CPU load on the system using like Prime95 or OCCT to load only the CPU, if you hear the whine, it's the PSU, if not then it's the video card for sure.

The fans on EE models whine terribly at speeds above 60-65%, play with the fan speed while not stressing GPU, just manually change it. See if you can make it come and go at will.

It's not from the fan, it happens instantly when you start a 3d app, such as atitools artifacts scanner, the heat doesn't even have time to go up before the whine happens.

if it's a high pitched kind of squeal coming from the graphics card, then it is just capacitor whine, nothing to worry about. A way to test to see if it is , is to load up oc scanner and load the card, then change the core frequency of the graphics card. if the sound changes - lower when you lower the overclock and higher when you increase the overclock, then it is definitely the capacitors on the graphics card. Over time, sometimes the noise will reduce. That power supply may well be an issue, it's getting a bit old, and was never a good one to begin with. I'd suggest your next purchase/upgrade be a new power supply. With those specs you don't need anything huge. A good 650w would be fine for your system. Maybe an 800 if you plan on upgrading your graphics to sli or 480/580 in the future.

I have put the overclock back to stock, for the sc edition and it still has the whine, it didn't do this before. and it does go up/gets louder when i increase the overclock. if it is a capacitor why is it whining? isn't that something that shouldn't be happening? On a side note, how much will a large overclock reduce the life of the card? Anyway to tell/estimate that? Is the card fine as long as you don't let it get too hot or does voltage increasing cause any damage/at what point is too much of an increase?

it will decrease life a little bit, but there is no way to tell how much. it's better to increase the core speed and leave the memory alone. As for the whine, it's what capacitors do. sometimes it's audible, sometimes not.

I noticed that you have left your voltage alone and have a higher clock speed, is that just dependent on cards or are there other factors?

I'd say start an RMA, I've heard a lot of 460's with capacitor whine is not a good thing.

The power circuitry on this card gets very hot... did you install a vreg heatsink? Maybe it's failing after all this time. Every 460 should have a vreg heatsink, but this EE model needs it most. Check out this link I found and take a look at the EE page... compare temps to other cards in the test... Reviewer recommends nothing over 800MHz on the core. Your OC isn't crazy, but over time it may have weakened the power stages. I measured with a laser thermometer back when I got my first 460's in 2010. They have all gotten heatsinks since. It should have been standard.

I was looking at the ARCTIC COOLING Accelero XTREME Plus II link to help with cooling but i am wondering how it cools the rest of the card since i only see gpu plate. and fins, unless it comes with seperate plates that install under the fins? does anyone know about this cooler? *aperently i can't do links ><*
