So whats the deal with x79. I understand its using sandy bridge i7 chips but what about the memory, anything special? how about speed vs a x58 board ( i picked x58 b/c im very familiar with them)? what about new x79 compatible cpus vs x58 cpus (speed) ? -thanks

Your original post was a bit scattered and tough to understand, let me see if I can pull out the crystal ball and reply with some information that you are actually looking for. As far as memory goes, the X79 platform runs quad-channel memory as opposed to the tri-channel X58 runs. The CPU's available for X79 range from 6 core to 4 core, some unlocked and others not unlocked. The most popular CPU for the X79 seems to be the 3930K based on price and performance.

No doubt X-79 is faster then X-58, I'm saying between the new Architecture and faster clock speeds you'll see a %20 to %25 improvement in speeds. You also get the two Sata 3 ports - so if you're running SSDs that will help also. What's nice about X-79 is the socket still has IB-E to upgrade too. With 1155, the socket will be replaced by Haswell next year. That plus all the PCIE lanes make this the chipset to get IMO.

☄ Helpful
X79 will remain the high end performance platform for at least a few years. Right now X79 supports the sandy bridge extreme processors, but is compatible and will support the upcoming ivy bridge extreme as well. X79 is socket 2011 and wil not support the vanilla sandy bridge or upcoming ivy bridge processors.
As mentioned X79 supports quad channel memory for some crazy bandwidth. But running quad is not mandatory, but obviously suggested. That all said, you WILL want to run memory that is tuned for X79 as it avoids memory related issues that can be had by runnin older ddr3 with the IMC of the SB-E chips.
In short X79 brings quad channel, PCIE 3.0, and 40 express lanes that can be beneficial for SLI, crossfire systems along with running SSD arrays.
A would suggest you google up a review of x79 and SB-E from November. It will provide more detail. Your post was so open and general I think that's why your responses were limited.

As mentioned there is nothing new that will replace LGA2011 anytime soon since IB-E isn't due until at least the second half of 2013. As for what IB-E is, just think of it this way. IB-E is to IB just like how SB is to SB-E or: SB -> SB-E IB -> IB-E

Also, if you're looking for a board be sure to grab one with good customer support. All the manufacturers are having issues with the new chipset.

That's a tough call - I came from a P55 - although I wasn't limited by that platform - I am loving x79. Faster encoding and folding plus I am finding it a more stable system - the system is def snappier as well. I decided I could wait - but eventually would make the jump - so decided to do it sooner rather than later... It's nice knowing I'm set for a while. I wouldn't want to go back.

seth89 This is what i was seeing a lot of, people have crazy problems with the x79. Is the platform even worth a upgrade from a x58 system at this current time? I have not had any significant problems with the new platform but there is a bit of a learning curve as there are some new options compared to the x58 platform One potential issue I see is that some people go with very high memory frequency kits upwards of 2400 MHz. In some cases this works with minimal adjustments but in other cases, people are unable to get this frequency stable. It is assumed that the board, BIOS, or memory kit is at fault. However, I think like the previous line of processors that there is going to be some variance between different IMCs. Some processors will be able to handle these high frequencies and others won't. Intel rates these new processors for up to 1600 MHz memory. I think if you buy a decent board with a DDR3-1600 kit and overclock by multiplier that you should not have any significant issues. Keep the memory at or around 1.5v. I read from an Intel rep on another forum that safe DRAM voltage is 1.5v +- 5%. You could also buy a 2133 or 2400 MHz kit and underclock the memory while running tighter timings. Corsair even sells a 2133 MHz kit rated for 1.5v. My only other recommendation would be to take the time and learn about every BIOS option because there are many options.

I haven't had any issues with my X79 system. In fact, it has been one the easiest systems to set up and overclock. I did a little homework ahead of time choosing the right brand of motherboard and the right memory kit for it. Going with a board that has all the right features that you want along with solid BIOS support makes a big difference. I've been up and running since November without any problems enjoying 6 Sandy Bridge cores rocking out at 5ghz with 32ghz of ram running 2133mhz.
I tend to find folks with issues are mixing and matching components from previous builds, or going with boards that have under baked BIOS support. You will definitely want to get the right memory that has XMP 1.3 validated on the board of your choice.
I was originally running 16GB of RAM @ 2400mhz, but increased it to 32GB to set up a 16GB RAM disk (which is lightning fast!). Although I already run SSDs for my OS and game disk, the ram disk is useful for my daily tasking.
Do you research and plan your build. Look through the various forums and see who is having the most success and what kit they are running. If you get the right components and plan your build, X79 can be a very good platform.

I'd say Asus customer service speaks for itself - also if I was looking for the board with the most features (albeit mostly useless) it wouldn't be an Asus - it'd be an ASRock.

Great rig mate, absolute insanity with that radiator near the window! Surprised it doesn't have liftoff with all those fans! Sorry to take this off topic, but can ATG and Door stop bringing your argument into every thread? It's getting old.

Agreed, I'm not sure when it became fashionable to recommend other motherboards in the EVGA forums - but it needs to stop. Particularly when manufacturers with questionable customer support, like Asus are being recommended. I will give EVGA credit though - most manufacturer forums will not allow you to mention other products (Asus & Corsair come to mind...). Here they just don't care - they stand by their products and their capabilities. If some goof wants to bring someone else up - let em.

This is the truth we are in EVGA forums i seen aquestion regarding an asus x79 i was like Who cares what your problem is don't you have your own forum for that brand( I think Not)LOL. should have thought bout that before you choose the wrong board. Its a new chip set what did you expect that it was going to have a bug free run over the next couple years like cmon either that guy jumped ship from EVGA to ASUS and is now paying the ultimate price or He is just had enough of products and customer service that just isn't there, and is seeking salvation over here in our forums. But IMO i think as big and proud as we are about EVGA and We all stand behind EVGA no matter And they stand behind us no matter what, Then i think we can afford to help a guy out because the chip sets and features are all the same, basically only the name and manufacture are diffrent. so lets be good host's and help these guys abit and maybe next time they will think twice before buying a non evga product with wicked customer support. I'm sure they get tons of info of this site anyways!
