I can understand the high end quaddro's and ati firepro's because of the huge frame buffers and lots of cores but like what makes this thing cost $800 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814106037? Aside from the 4-display support it seems like a pretty budget gpu.

I guess its that KX20 connector. The KX20 seems to be some kind of proprietary connector. As to what for, I have no idea.

Well for what they are used for makes them what they are.  Plus I think the Cuda cores and that too right?

It powers 4 DVI screens Via that "KX20" connector with the  included adapter. It uses that just so it can keep its low profile form factor.

This card would have been worth that much when it came out due to the low profile form factor and the ability to power 4 screens at 1600 x 1200.

This card is just... old and since i doubt that company makes that card anymore they think they can keep the price high since someone might need it as a replacement is my best guess.

However as with all workstation cards it is over priced for the amount of power it has.

You are paying entirely for drivers and customer service. When you call one of these companies about an issue with your workstation card, you won't get front line support, you will get senior support reps and people who have been doing it for many years. As for drivers, these are extremely different from your mainstream card drivers, they are designed to be extremely accurate, they are not about pushing out FPS. The difference is in the ability to get the job done with the highest accuracy and render speeds possible.

Look at it this way, most businesses that use workstation cards have projects that can run 50k to millions of dollars in cost. Having a 3000 dollar card that you know will work at the highest degree of accuracy and performance for your workstation is a very small price to pay in the profits that the card will help net your company.

They are also high bin chips with the best success. Also if those cards get messed up, you can expect next day delivery on a replacement.
