Im running the GPU3 version of folding at home, I have MSI Afterburner at auto for the fan speed since I can't stand the noise at 100%. Its at around 70% fan speed right now and holding around there but the temp is 90 to 94C. I have my side panel off to get more air in the case....no external fan blowing in because I don't have one. I do know the 400 series runs really hot and the shut off is 105c. Is it ok for my 470 to run around 90-95 all night doing the GPU3 Folding? If not tell me now so I can uninstall this program and cool down my card. My hunch is that I shouldn't run this all night at 90-95C but thats why im asking you guys. What should I do?

As with all computer components, running hot will add more wear and tear. They are meant to be ran at lower temps so they last longer but I guess if you don't care bout longevity, you can leave it running that hot.

Steelgaze, why do you think im asking in the forums for the card itself...Im new to this kinda stuff and all im doing is asking advice. Yes I know 90-93 is very hot for the card but didnt know how long I could run it while doing the stupid folding stuff. I know that heat kills anything with computers most of the time. I was only asking if any other people had more experience folding with the 470 and the temps it put out while doing so, I didnt need to get flamed for it...Ive already uninstalled the folding program until i get my two extra gpu fans for christmas, then maybe ill try again.

Those temps are pretty high. If you can get them down to 80-85C at least, that would be better but 90-94 running all night doesn't sound too good. Kick up the fan speed to around 85%.

yeah i uninstalled msi afterburner and installed evga precision which actually did a better job for the little test i ran again a few mintues ago on folding. it bumped up the fan speed 10 more notches to 80 instead of 70 and kept the card around 75-80c under full load from folding. im hopefully gonna be getting three more fans for my computer: two for directly on the 470 and 9600GT and one at the top to exhaust the hot air they kick out. i may put in two more near the video cards at a later date but money is tight and all i can probably afford are 3 at this time. thank you for giving me your point of view on this and not flaming me for stuff im not to sure about yet, i appreciate it.

i have the same card as you when i check my temps with precision at idle it is around 40 C but i am not running @home.  i have antec 900 case with lots of air flow.  when i play my games which are medal of honor and black ops i run at 80C at the very most

my 470 is idling at 50c right now and my 9600 at 58-60. this is all with the side door off and only two case fans, one front and one back lol. cant wait to get three more so i can close up my system and have the airflow normal again. ive got the nvidia cm stacker 830. its a huge case so once i get all the fans i can put in there it should be a lot cooler even under load.

try TIM replacement - I'd fold at 67 deg c with fan at 60/65% with reapplied TIM.

Better still I have an aftermarket cooler now - its like a totally different card. Silent (and I mean silent) folding at 47 deg c. I have a zalman vf3000f and the heatsink is at least 3 time the size of a standard 470 ref card.

TIM replacement sounds like a good idea. That cooler is nice too. I like the Accelero Extreme.

75-80C is much better. If you are confortable with 85% speed for now, that should keep you going until you upgrade your cooling.

    Moh & Black Ops don't stress my card much and I max everything @ 1920x1080. @ 99% Constant load I'm @ 73C average, 75C max.

Also make use of the custom fan control in the evga precision tool it works flawlessly. You can adjust the fan speeds according temps the card hits

A "cost you nothing" way to really reduce your operating temps is to try undervolting your card. If you don't need to OC it beyond it's stock, try tuning the voltage down with Afterburner. You'd be surprised how much heat you can reduce by a simple -0.025V drop.

It should also be noted that the newer 6800 WU's run considerably hotter than previous WU's. The 6811's run even hotter than the 6800's IIRC.

My 470's are running between 44-48c folding 6811's currently and that's the hottest my 470's have ever been. Yes, they are watercooled but w/ previous WU's before the 68xx's they barely reached 40c.

Hopefully that gives you an idea of just how hot these newer WU's are.
