First Post, First Build, Have read all the threads I can find about OS install and setup, but still have some questions.

Windows 7 Ultimate OEM 64 Bit
X58 SLI Board
i7920
BFG Geforce GTX 275 Gpu
12 GB Corsair Dominator TR3X6G1600cpd 6x2
Thermaltake Toughpower 850ap
Coolermaster 922 Haf Case
2  1tb Hitachi Hd
1 74 gb Raptor
1 120gb ocz Vertex 2 (Just Purchased)
All other components were purchased in Sep09,  (Family emergency caused me to relocate for 14 months, postponing build until now.)

Main use of system is processing large PS panorama Files.

I want to use SSD for os and apps, the 2 hitachi for raid, (not sure what to do with Raptor, scratch disc maybe ?)

I am using owcraftsmans install tut as a guide, but still confused.....

1. Do raid drives need to be pluged in when installing OS on SSD?
(Saw on OCZ Guide to only have SSD connected when installing OS.)

2. Do I need to set SSD in Bios to achi and then set Raid drives to Raid. ?

3. At what point in install do I set up Raid drives ?

Have read various opinions on which drivers to update at install or wait till later, any advice on this appreciated. My EVGA Driver CD is 14 months old.

Have assembled basic components and booted into Bios, getting ready to update Bios.
Thanks

Welcome, When you say X58 SLI, I assume you mean the 758, which has the Intel, and the JmCron ports,

If you have enough ports, I would avoid the red ports, if Not I would use them for DVD/CD drives.
Connect the SSD to Intel Port 0,
The raptor in Intel port 1
the two Hitachi in 2 & 3
Your CD/DVD in 4 or 5.
( Note if there is a chance that you may add another SSD later to Raid 0 leave port 1 empty, and move the rapter to 4 or 5 which ever your not using )
At Boot Enter Bios and select Raid for Sata mode,  ( this will place allother drives not selectedfor raid in AHCI. ) save and exit, Boot again, Press Controll-I when told to Do so, Select the two Hitichi Drives and place them in raid. Set them up and Boot again. Set Bios so that your CD rom is your first boot device, and place the windows CD in the drive.  Boot and select the SSD. Load windows. after it loads look at computer, if you do not see your other drives. Click start. right click computer, Manage, storage, and select disk manager snap in, allocate and assign and format if necessary,  any drive that is black, and not blue.
after that it should show, Note you will want to chande your HD back to Primary boot device, unless you dont mind waiting on the CD/DVD to time out, and you will want to disable The JMcron ports unless your forced to use them for a CD/DVD drive. (Note, if you do use the Jmcron ports for a HD, you will need to load drivers before they can be used, and if you want to boot from them this will have to be done with the windows install.

best way imo is to install ssd then install os ect. then go back and install 2 hdd's for raid, configure and setup once in os. map your games/storage to the raid array and os and apps on the ssd.

^ if you do it that way though you may have issues selecting Raid, with a single drive, You may have to use the Reg edit trick, to change modes, after windows is already installed. You would still want to select raid for sata mode and just not select anything with Control I, then connect the other drives.

The way I listed was the way I set up mine, but I had to use the Jmcron for the Optical drive. as I had 3 40G SSD's OCZ, 2 Seagate 1TB, and a scratch drive. which did not leave a intel port for the cd/dvd. After you get everything installed, you ma want to google Intel RST. to reserch, or go to
Search Results

Re:New Build Setup Saturday, December 25, 2010 2:27 AM (permalink) ☄ Helpful
Most definitely install windows on the SSD but enable RAID before you do so for AHCI support. You should also make sure it's a blank drive and you let the windows install routine format and partition the drive.

The windows install routine has nothing to do with the setting up RAID that is a function of the Bios and option ROM or the keystrokes "Ctrl + I" at POST. If your intention was to install the OS on a RAID array it would need to be built prior to booting to the install disk.

With the 700 series motherboards you could enable RAID per port but first you had to enable RAID then the individual ports. X58 has changed things up a bit. Now all you do is enable IDE or RAID or AHCI mode and the system acts accordingly. IDE for legacy devices such as older IDE Hard drives. AHCI introduces support for NCQ etc. RAID of course enables the combining of disk in various arrays (RAID 0-1-5) and AHCI will be enable with it.

Build the RAID array after or before but the main thing to do to avoid confusion at install is just have the one storage device attached. This makes sure the Install routine isn't confussed by mutiple disk and that the correct drive letter (C:\) is assigned to your primary disk.

Use all black ports (ICH10R) for RAID and AHCI support if you run out of port use the others for optical drives and keep storage device on the later.

If you built the RAID array before installation just try and use the same two ports you used when you built the array when you reattach the drives. If you built the array properly and the drives are in good working order the system should have no problem recognizing the array again. That said if you want to avoid a mishaps you could install the two drives and build the RAID array after the OS installation.

I just want to be clear,  AHCI (TRIM support)  is enabled when RAID is, but RAID is not when AHCI mode is enabled. If you switch from AHCI mode to RAID mode you install could get hosed requiring you to reinstall again.

I hope this answers your Q's

They (JMicron Red ports) are under performing and problematic especially with storage drives however I have not heard of problems when peeps use optical drives on these ports. A feww google searches will bare that out. I suspect it's for the same reason Sata III 6G ports don't work as well as the Intel Sata II ports the difference is i one is native to the motherboard chipset and the other is a discrete chip/controller added to the motherboard. I suppose there are those who need/use these ports when a separate controller is required to good benefit which is why they are included with these boards.

Re:New Build Setup Monday, December 27, 2010 0:19 PM (permalink)
The red ports are not native to te X58 chipset, so additional drivers are required, This means they are not as user friendly, and have additional overhead, the more overhead, the more things that can go wrong. since they are not used by as many people there are fewer people that can help you when you do have issues. since they are not used by as many people they take a back seat, when/if intel, microsoft, does an update. Basicaly, THE GAIN IS NOT WORTH THE PAIN .

Aren't the red ports the only ones that are SATA III (6Gbs)? Not hijacking this thread. Just trying to understand why the OP would not want to use the faster SATA III ports. Or is it that the SATA III part is ok, but the RAID part is what's messed up?

The marvel are indeed the only sata3 6GBS ports, but they appear to be bandwidth limited, and underperform in a raid set up, they appear to be able to handle, a single drive within it's specifications, Most mechanical drives, are also limited by the mechanical limatations, and despite some being on a sata3 controler, will never saturate a sata3 port, If you are not going to recive the bennifit of sata3 anyway, than there is just no point in jumping through hoops to get it to work, when the native intel ports will provide better speeds, with less setup, and configeration. This may change as drivers and firmware mature, but if it is a hardware hard wall, than it would be X68 chipset before this changes.

The 758 has only sata 2, Intel, and JmCron. the sata 3's are all Marvell.
On the 756,757,758,759*,760,761*,762*, the red ports are JMcron. Sata2 ( 3GBS) JMcron Controll-J
Sata 3 ( Gb/s ) red ports are Marvell, Classy3, FTW3,SLI3, 767,768,770, The black ports use control-I to enter raid set up,  and marvell Controll-M
*(Note A761 is just a 760 that came with the ECP in the package it had Limited distributers )( Ones with * had ECP)
*( note the 759 and the 762 are the only boards with NF200 Chips )
