How many of you have overclocked 980x past 4.0ghz and still use turbo? I'm going to begin to oc my system this weekend once my northbridge fan comes in. I was curious if anyone continues to use Turbo mode after oc'ing past 4ghz.

I think turbo mode only applies if you leave multiplier at default values (i.e. 25 for 980x). Bios disables it automatically once you change the multiplier (gray'd in bios).

Yes, but you could overclock past 4ghz using turbo mode correct? I was wondering if anyone uses this feature almost like speedstep. Customizing it to clock higher when certain conditions are met.

As i said before, the only way you could break 4.0GHz with turbo mode is by leaving multiplier untouched and raising Bclock only... Ruins all the interest of having a 980x. In this case you could get a 970, saves $$$, and get the same results more or less.

I was just curious. 980x was the way to go. 12 threads for vray renders are a huge boon.

Exactly my point, Alucard... 970 is the same exact chip as 980x with 24x multiplier locked instead of 25x multiplier unlocked for 980x... But it's also quite cheaper...

I wish I had 1K to drop on a cpu. But I didn't so I think the 970 was a fair compromise.

you, having a 970 @4.5 and me having a 980x @4.13 pretty much sums it all... Thank god i only paid the 980x half price or i would have gone 970 myself too...

LOL... now i'm screwed haha... But seriously, on topic. 980x is a very cool running chip... i'm running mine @ 4.13 solely on an MP increase everything else @ default and my temps are like 20°C lower in idle and load than my 920 @3.8 with the same cooler. Turbo is a gadget at this level of speed... if you want to go low freq. on idle, just enable speedstep and the chip will only run @ full speed when needed just like turbo...

Thanks, that cooler rocks and is a 1000 units limited edition too, but man... it weights 2Kg!!! 970 can keep turbo on because multiplier is locked. but since all cores get +1 on the MP when stressed 100%, just have to go +1 permanently with the 980x since it's permited. As for temps, all 32nm chips seems to run cool with idle temps in the ~30 and full load in the ~60
