Hey, I currently have an evga x58 sli le mobo with 6 gigs [ 2 x 3ghz] of 1866mhz corsair dominator ram.. I am trying to upgrade and possibly get 12 gigs so my video rendering goes faster. Do i need to get the same ram, or can I get something else? If I can get another type of ram, what do you guys recommend I get? Thanks

shrekdaklown honestly id sell those and just grab this kit a full 16 gigs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231499 hes on x58 , tri channel memory is defaulted on that platform going with quad channel memory is NOT ideal , having 3 or 6 sticks would make sense

pghaffari http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16820145292 i have these, what do you recommend getting to add to them? funny thing is that you own the fastest ( 3 X 2gb modules) available on newegg.. so buying another 3 would make sense, do you have 6 ram modules on your mobo? you can go ahead and get 3 X 4gb modules for around same price http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16820226196 ^ mushkin is a brand i trust with my life , and those are a bit faster ram then yours for only 20 bux extra having 3 modules vs 6 modules is less stresful on the cpu ( memory controller is on the cpu)

So you recommend getting 3x4gb instead instead of 3 extra sticks? I'll look into those sticks :P THX

well for a tripple channel kit id pick up 2 of these for 24gb's ram and they are 1600 but will oc to 1866 and honestly there really isnt a difference between 1600 and 1866 plus lower voltage

pghaffari what do you mean my maxing it out? Like the timings..? Do you use all 6GB when you are rendering? If not then there is zero point in getting more. If you are using all 6GB then you could use more RAM. Generally more RAM does not make your computer faster. It only makes it faster if you use all of it and your computer could utilize more. Faster RAM would mean a higher MHz or tighter timings. Generally you get more speed from a higher speed vs the tighter timings. With the X58 platform anything higher than 1600MHz can lead to stability issues because of how weak the IMC [Integrated Memory Controller] is in the CPU. This can generally be alleviated by increasing the CPU VTT Voltage in the BIOS. I have never rendered a video before so I do not know the average consumption of RAM. Most people I see who do Render and Encode stuff like to have 24GB of RAM. I would get this kit here http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16820231359 If you got money to burn, these have tighter timings but cost four times as much http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16820231458

yeah i use all my memory when I render and I think I would notice a big difference in an upgrade. But if I have money to spare, do you think it is time for a computer upgrade? like more than just ram, or is a memory upgrade fine for now?

depends on your cpu but there probably isn't a need for a full upgrade
