Just a quick question here about power boost and multiple graphics cards. My motherboard (X58 4-way SLI) has a molex pin above the PCI-E lanes to remove the load off the 24 pin motherboard connector so it does not fry or overheat to the point were it melts. In my system I have 3 EVGA GTX 580 HC 2's over-clocked with max voltage (1150 voltage). I bought the power boost so that I could make my system look better by removing that molex connection because I thought it looked bad having a wire come across all the graphics card (it was only 9$ why not).

So here comes my main question, with this power boost (currently in the last PCI-E 2.0 X16 lane) does this fully take on the role that the molex pin is used for, thus removing the need to use the molex with tri-sli? I just really don't want my motherboard to get damaged (it happened to me once when I was running 4-way SLI before I sold a card).

Thanks!

This is a -very- good question

I belive only the motherboards design engineer could answer it properly.

Personally, I would use the Molex provided for the PCIEx power.
My "thinking" is the placement of the cards is such, that having the PowerBoost module in the last PCIE slot might allow more draw on the top cards from the 24pin.
    -->This is just my opinion

The Powerboost will fit in the PCIEx1 soundcard slot (thats where I have mine).
    *see my ModsRigs pic
That puts my Powerboost between the cards and my 24pin

Oh interesting, Never thought of it like that. I might move mine up if that is in fact a problem. I will need to move mine to second slot though as my first has a GPU in it. I only have X16 slots, so its possible my gpu's are to high up.

    Thanks for the answer.

Yeah if you tuck it under the first card in the first covered slot, that would be much better placement.
The 24pin can take any draw from a single card and you will have the powerboost in front of the others and between them, and the 24pin

Is there anyway to test to see if this power booster is working. After my last motherboard almost melted on me I am a little bit paranoid over the thought.

I haven't done more than 20 mins of gaming (not even hard to run games) as was waiting on responses from this thread.

The power booster in the last slot which is 2 below (if counting the power booster slot) the last card. Would it at least help the third card from drawing power from the 24 pin do you think?

I really think you should just use that Molex and be done with the worry.
Im sure you can find a nice sleeved molex extender and make it look good bro.

As for testing, I read voltage levels under load with both Afterburner/GPUz before I installed my PowerBoost
They showed minor voltage drops and some flux under heavy load, nothing out of ATX spec.

After the powerboost was installed, the 12v voltage under max load at 900mhz core is 100% stable
12.01v on card one, 11.88v on card two... has never changed since I put it in, most awesome stabilty

Oh I had a sleeved one but it ruined the look. I am...sadly...very anal when it comes to how the inside of my PC looks.

Maybe you should PM this guy http://forums.evga.com/fb.ashx?m=1711167

He appears to know a great deal about the subject
He might know the -correct- answers to the questions you are asking
-->He might even be able to make you a "hidden" custom molex

If you have an power connection specifically for powering the PCIe slots EVGA recommends using it.  If you do not and you are running multiple cards in the system we recommend using the Power Boost.

Please note: do not use both at the same time or multiple Power Boosts in the same system as the traces on the board can only handle so much current and using multiple extra PCIe power may damage the motherboard.

The Power Boost offers the exact same functionality as the molex connector on the board.

Thanks everyone for the help, this is why I love coming here and only buy EVGA products when I can! Hopefully this can help anyone else who has this same question.

I've heard great things about this product, and lots of people seem to want one. So why does eVGA not make more? I've already burned out one 24-pin plug on my power supply, so I really need this fix. I ordered one even though it's out of stock, but I'll have to run just one video card until I get mine.

Unfortunately there no EVGA power boost as I been looking for you! Guess it out of stock but I just wonder if you mean 24 pin for your motherboard power? If so maybe you can replace the new Power Supply PSU or maybe you can try fix new replace 24 pin plug as I think it not easy to fix 24 pin as I don't know really but maybe get new PSU???

Hope is that what you try saying?
