So she has this new iPhone 4S, which her son dropped and cracked the screen. She asked if I could fix it, I said sure... I purchased the new screen for $30 on eBay and when I received it I got to work on it... Opened the phone up and connected it, etc. etc. I accidently broke the new screen too (lol?) then while closing it back up I accidently ripped the battery cable (SERIOUSLY?) How this happened? I'm not patient at ALL, So with all these little screws and unplugging small cables, It really gets me angry and I knew this before hand, Why I accepted, I have no idea. It could have been fixed for $65 elsewhere, But I wanted to see if I could do it (I couldn't, Obviously) Anyways, Without telling her, I went ahead and purchased her a brand new iPhone 5. (Which she wanted, But when she got her contract, She couldn't really afford the iPhone 5 and went with the iPhone 4S instead) so if I was going to pay $400 for a replacement (non-contract) iPhone 4S, Then why not just step it up a bit and be a good brother, By purchasing her a brand new, iPhone 5? ^_^ When I told her I broke her phone more, She was okay with it (Surprisingly, She usually gets angry about everything) and then when I told her I bought her a new iPhone 5, She was super excited. I just thought I'd share this little event, Because it has me feeling down for the fact that I wasn't able to complete a simple task :(. Replacing laptop screens is MUCH easier IMHO.

Repairing very small components takes extreme patience. I have repaired several 3G and 3GS iPhones and they are very difficult. The smaller the phones become the more difficult they are to repair.

You sound like a great brother. Those cables are like paper and even experienced iphone people tear them (you have a lot of company).

Nice ! My phone needs some repairing. So just to heads up on the matter.... after the repair, get a Galaxy Note2. My eyes are going south and the extra real estate will keep my eyes in check a little longer. Way to step up.. admit defeat.. and mm fix ? the situation !

I've broken two iphones replacing parts in them in past years. Just have someone else do the fixes at a premium. I learned the hard way.

That was nice of you to get her another phone. Not sure how you managed to break the other screen, and especially break that cord. Just have to say one thing more. If my phone breaks, I know where I won't be sending it to be fixed.

There is something sadistically pleasurable about breaking an Apple product. Even if it is already damaged.

Ah , don't feel bad . My wife washed her phone today w/a garden hose rinsing off my truck . She told me it was only "damp" because of her sweaty hands . When I pulled off the rear cover & flipped it water poured out ! She still claimed is what sweat , then realized what she did ... then it was "my fault " 'cause she sprayed my truck ! We went to Verizon & got her a new Samsung phone .

P.S. while pulling in the 2 cables on the screen, 1 got jammed and I spent 15 minutes fixing it, but couldn't do it, So I pulled, Hard and it came loose to where the screen was just white. I removed it again and tried lifting up the screen and it's super sensitive... lol. so it got ruined, Then while removing the battery a 3rd time, The connection wouldn't come off, I put a little bit of pressure and the plastic thing I was using slipped and pulled the ribbon thing instead of the connector and it ripped (super thing). That's how. lol :)

Maybe next time you can look for a Youtube video that shows how to replace an iPhone screen. I'm sure there are some out there. ;)

There are quite a few videos available but the actual work should be done by someone who works well with small electronic devices. XrayMan Maybe next time you can look for a Youtube video that shows how to replace an iPhone screen. I'm sure there are some out there. ;)

I'd never have told her I broke it, I'd have just smiled, hand her the new phone, and say, "there, I fixed it"

Hey, I have an old phone that needs repairing, can I send it to you? :) Just kidding, but you did good by replacing it. As others have said, electronic device repair is not for the impatient, and even the best of us can break stuff occasionally. Not that I have ever done that, I'm perfect! *cough*broke the screen on a $2000 laptop*cough*

I'm sure there are some out there. ;) I was actually watching a youtube video on it, very good might I add, he even warned some of the things that could go wrong and he explained how to prevent it, Both of which I mistakenly did. haha... I'm just too impatient. I'll repair a laptop, But I will never touch a phone again. Plus, She's been through a lot and I feel she truly deserves the iPhone 5, Instead of an old 4s.

It happens man, I've got well over 30 Iphone repairs and a few macbook repairs under my belt but my first few something always went wrong. My very first repair I nicked the cable that goes to the power with my putty knife on a Ipad 2, then on my next one I tore the cable to the 3G antenna on a 4s, and finally my latest one was a macbook where I forgot to check for difference in the third party screen, turns out there's a slight difference in thickness between the glasses so the magnet apple provide for the sleep switch (when you close the lid) was not powerful enough to trigger sleep mode anymore and had to be replaced with an earth magnet. All in all, the more you do it the better you get at it. It's cool that you owned up to your mistake and looked out for your sister $500+ is no small amount of money (for most of us anyhow!).
