Hello,

I recently purchased an EVGA 1GB EE GTX460, and from what i am reading on the web, my idle temps and load temps seem to be significantly higher than what most people are reporting.

I am seeing idle temps around 50-60c and load temps capping at 99c with furmark or playing bad company 2.  Room temperature is 22-26c with the AC on.

I really don't think circulation in my case is the issue, i have and Antec nine hundred two (902), with 5-120 mm fans, and the 200mm exhaust at the top.  2 of the 120mm fans are blowing from the side of the case over the top of the video card, and i installed another at the front of the video card, so i have 2 of these fans blowing on the card, one from the top, and the other from the side. 2 more fans are intake at the front, and the last is the exhaust.

I have also noticed the stock fan seems to rattle alot while it is spinning up, as if it is unbalanced, and ma wondering if that is the issue, or do all the EE setups sound this horrible?

i am running an AMD 965 BE @ 3.8GHz, with 4GB RAM, and win7 64.

Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

Are you using 2 monitors? That kicks the cards temps up like you posted.

And yeah, the cards fan should not "rattle" at all

Download and install MSI Afterburner. Setting up a custom fan profile should help those temps alot.

Still dont like that "rattle" sound. Try touching the fan cover with your finger when its running... if that changes the sound, I would RMA the card.

I'm running 2 monitors (25" and a 19") and my idle temp is 49 currently, which is fine, but load has never gone over 75c and the fan doesn't get loud at all. So you definitely have a problem.

Yeah, two monitors always run hotter on Nvidia 400 series cards, it causes the clocks to tick up.

    My 470 idles at 34c (40% fan)

with furmark running, the fan automatically goes to 100, and temp maxes at 99c, and it is constant.

if i squeeze the card slightly while it is at full load the pitch does change a little, but it seems at the lower speeds (30-60%)it rattles most.

I think you have an RMA in your near future. I seriously think that a bad batch of these cards got made. Because you have 2 camps with these 460 EE cards. Those that get terrible temps and noise and those that don't. There just isn't any middle ground.

I did some more real world testing in Bad Company 2, and at 100% fan speed i am still at about 90-95c, this is better than 99c but still high right?  i am reading post people peak around 70c at load.

My 1G 460 EE idles at 38-40C and game loads at 70C max. Furmark Stress I can get it to 80C on auto fanspeed. My ambient temperature is ~25-26C.

How many hard drives do you have and how are they arranged? Maybe you are obstructing the air path with them or with the cables.

I have a Antec 900 w/ 4 HDs, 2 in each HDD cage using he top and bottom slots of each cage for HHDs leaving the middle as clearance for the air from the front fans to get into the case. I also made sure there is nothing more than just a couple SATA cable blocking this passage.

i dont think the HDD are the issue, i have 1 500GB WD Blue, and a 120GB SSD.

and as i said earlier, i have 2 120mm fans blowing over the top and along the right side of the card directly, in addition to the intake and exhaust.

Those temps are extremely high, especially for a 460, I have 480 overclocked and when I'm playing BFBC2 I have the fan set to 90% and it never breaks 66 c, settings are maxed out too and vsync is off.

I agree. Maybe you guys got a bad card since I haven't been able to get my 460 above 60C even with FurMark!
It usually idles around 30C with 40% fan.
I can't believe how cool this card runs compared to the 275 it replaced. With the 275 I could put my hand at the exhaust and feel the heat coming out. With this new card I don't feel any heat at all! Also the 275 used to idle around 60C and get above 90C with FurMark under load.
I heard the EE version is supposed to run a bit warmer than the stock version I have but still you guys shouldn't be getting anywhere above 70C IMO.

Re:GTX 460 1GB EE High Idle temps and load temps 2010/09/10 20:14:07 (permalink)
I am getting insanely high temperature out of my GTX 460 1GB EE since the free EVGA BIOS upgrade.

    Here is my set-up...

    ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400
Cooler Master V8 CPU Heatsink and Fan
    8GB G.Skill DDR2 800 (4x2GB)
    Western Digital Black 1TB
    ASUS 24x DVD Burner
EVGA GTX 460 1GB EE Video Card
Cooler Master CM 690 II Advanced Case
4 120mm Cooler Master (R4-L2R-20AC-GP) Case Fans (1 is intake, 3 are exhaust)
2 140mm Cooler Master (R4-L4S-10AB-GP) Case Fans (1 is intake. 1 is exhaust)

    Here is the intake/exhaust pattern...
The 2 fans on the top of the case, 1 140mm and 1 120mm fan are exhaust. The fan on the rear of the case (120mm) is also exhaust. I switched the side panel fan (120mm) to an exhaust recently to try and get more warm air out of the case. 1 120mm fan is located at the bottom of the case is intake. And lastly, the 140mm fan located on the lower half on the front face panel is an intake.

I cannot keep temperatures under control for anything. Idle, it's normal. anywhere between 34'c to 40'c... but the second I start playing ANY game, from Halo 2 to Metro 2033, my temperatures shoot up as high ass 100'c and the program shuts down.

I run the games to my monitors native resolution of 1920 x 1080.  The monitor is an Acer H213H connected via HDMI. I never approached temps like this using my EVGA GTX 275 that I had.  That card peaked at around 75-80'c. It rarely went over that, at anytime.

Anyone have any ideas?  Or is there an RMA in my future?

I have 2 Gtx 460 sc ee in sli and they are both overclocked a pinch.
Idle temps are 42 & 28. Load temps are 50 to 55. I'm running MSI afterburner and have a antec 300 case. Your temps seem to be way somewhat on the high side, I'd call evga and get a trouble ticket going.

I started a trouble ticket.  I'm happy I at least have a GTX 275 I can use in the time being if I have to RMA this one... I just hope this is a one time issue and not an ongoing thing.  I installed the MSI Afterburner for the fan profile alone... and it doesn't seem to be helping period.  This thing is running hot hot hot.

Yeah most likely an anomaly since there are plenty of reviews and other user like myself with really cool temps with this card.

@Loiselle - I'm running a GTX 460 EE SC folding in a CM 690 II no probs at 70C. My fan setup is a little different than yours, but in essence, its full fans. (2 140mm top externals, 120mm rear external, 120mm side intake, 140mm front intake, 120mm modded in front for intake) I would definitely RMA your card.

I RMA'd the card, should be here Tuesday... hopefully, it's a better card.  I need to get my gaming fix on... and this ATi x1600 Pro won't even play solitare! (that's a joke, obviously... but close.)

Got the new card installed and it's running like a dream. BioShock 2 is running at 1920x1080 @ unlocked frame rate, at well above 120fps under most conditions, and never breaking 75'c.  Very happy right now.  Thank you, EVGA.

    Hey All,

Just wanted to let you know i RMA'ed the card as advised, and received it a few days ago.

Whilest waiting for the EVGA replacement, i bought another ZOTAC GTX460 1GB, it runs super quiet and super cooled, 60-70c at 100% load for 20 minutes, and its overclocked to the tits.

I received the EVGA card and it to is performing like the ZOTAC in SLI configuration, so there was definately something wrong with the original card. I have yet to hear my fan come on at all, while the older card sounded like a band saw.

Both cards are running in sync with the Core clocked at 850MHz, Shader at 1700, and Memory clocked at 2000Hz.

So i am happy to say this has been resolved!
