Man talk about a change of pace.  Audit mode to customize the install and then using the AIK on a separate windows 7 machine to configure the XML file to use on the prep machine.  Could they have made the process anymore murky than the previous XP sysprep.inf file?
Anyway, just venting a little bit.  It wasn't so bad after about an hour of reading up on it but still.....sheesh.

Anyone else setup sysprep on a windows 7 install lately?

You might be able to use vlite - http://www.vlite.net/

vLite is the Vista/7 version of nLite, a handy tool to create ISOs of customized, ready-to-deploy XP installs.  It offers the ability to create unattended CD installs, preload drivers onto the disk, preset control panel options, and for the nuttier among us, remove portions of Windows.

Or you could use the new RT 7Lite....   since Vlite isn't 100% compatible with Win 7....

I've tried it once and it seemed to work great, and you don't have to install the WAIK...

Sysprep, after the initial setup, is actually quite nice to use and makes my life easier as a University tech.

Here's a few links help you with AIK.  I used this and then just customized the user names I needed.

I agonized for weeks over getting a sysprep image that did what I wanted (custom backgrounds, icon placement, etc) and once I followed those two guides I was set.  Now I just update my "master image" (A GX780) every month or two and I can use my syspreped image on almost every Win 7 Dell in the University with minimal driver worries.  Very rarely do I have to go get drivers for something sysprep missed. I even use it on laptops.

Edit: I said the word "easy" too many times and it bothered me.

Edit 2: You can actually make your XML on any Windows.  I used XP.
